Walks down Falcons on rainy day

AVON, Ohio - The Notre Dame College baseball team lost 12-10 against West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday afternoon during a rain-filled game in Sprenger Stadium.

Both the Falcons and Bobcats took advantage of pitching struggles in the wet environment as 19 combined batters took first base on walks. Seven of the last 10 runs scored by the teams were done so by runners who got on base by drawing a walk or being hit by a pitch.

NDC trailed 4-2 after the first two innings, but came back to take a 6-4 lead after the fifth inning with the final two runs brought in by a Nick Rearick double. Rearick finished with a team-high four RBIs.

As the rain picked up, WVWC scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 10-6 only for the Falcons to respond with four runs of their own and tie the game.

With the score sitting 10-10 heading into the seventh and final inning, Dominic Castello hit a double for the Bulldogs with the bases loaded to bring in the two game-winning runs. Castello matched Rearick with four RBIs of his own during the game.

Joining Rearick with multiple RBIs was Zach Santoro who brought in two runs. Santoro also led the team with three runs scored.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to the weather, but will be replayed on Monday, April 3 at West Virginia Wesleyan. The make-up game will be played as if it were a home game for the Falcons. Before heading to Buckhannon, W.Va., Notre Dame will play a doubleheader at Glenvile State on Sunday, April 2 starting at 1 p.m.
