WISE, Va. - For the second day in a row it was late game heroics by the opposing team that did in the Notre Dame College baseball team. In two one-point losses handed to the Falcons by Virginia-Wise, the Cavaliers scored tie-breaking runs in the sixth and seventh inning of the games, respectively.
In game one, pitching controlled the first part of the game until
Jacob Carpenter hit a single shot on a 2-2 count in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning the Falcons scored again, this time on a sacrifice hit from
Nick Ely that brought in
Adam Purdy.
Virginia-Wise responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run double to tie things up 2-2 heading into the sixth inning. To start the sixth inning, it was again a sacrifice hit that scored for NDC as
Austin Barnhart drove in Carpenter. Again, the Cavaliers responded. And again, it was a two-run double that led to the final two runs of the game for a final of 5-4.
Notre Dame was on the board first in the second game after a single hit to right field by
Ricky Phillips earned a two-run lead. The Cavaliers followed the visitor's lead for a third time tying up the game with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning.
In the second inning, the Falcons added two more after Ely walked with the bases loaded and Phillips earned another RBI. With two hits against Virginia-Wise and two the previous day against Concord, Phillips moved to second on the team with a batting average of .324 on the season.
The Cavs added three runs in the next three innings to gain a 5-4 lead after the fifth inning.
Danny Beaver scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to tie the game, but Virginia-Wise scored an unearned run in the seventh inning to win the game 6-5.
