ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord Mountain Lions won both games against the Notre Dame College baseball team, scoring their winning runs in the fifth inning in game one and seventh inning in game two in their two games on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, a seven-inning contest, pitching ruled as both teams' had players throw complete games. Despite a final score of 4-0, in favor of Concord, John Armbruster only gave up one earned run. Armbruster threw his second complete game of the season and had a season-low game era (1.50).
Troy Becker earned his third win of the season while giving up just two hits. Becker has gone 3-0 on the season for the Mountain Lions. First baseman
Nate Rearick was the lone Falcon to record a hit against Becker, going two-for-three in game one.
In the second game, NDC found itself down 4-0 after a big first inning for Concord. A grand slam from Trevor Wiersma gave the Mountain Lions a lead was kept until the sixth inning when the Falcons came back to tie things up a four runs apiece.
The comeback started not long after Wiersma's home run as
Jacob Carpenter and
Angelo Tornatore each drove in a run in the second inning to bring the game within two. In the sixth inning, two more Notre Dame players drove in runs of their own to tie the game.
Ricky Phillips batted in one runner and scored the second run during the inning. In game two, Phillips tallied two hits, two runs, two stolen bases and an RBI while also earning a trip to first base on a walk.
In the next inning, an RBI single gave the Mountain Lions a one-run lead that they held on to until the final out, resulting in a 5-4 final. The bats controlled things in game two as the Falcons totaled 11 of the 19 hits during the game while all nine batters recorded at least one hit against Concord.
Notre Dame (3-12, 0-2 MEC) will look to rebound at Virginia-Wise tomorrow, March 20. The doubleheader games are scheduled to begin at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
