CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons were held to 26 points in the second half as they fell to the Charleston Golden Eagles, 71-61 on Saturday afternoon.
The loss for the Falcons (15-7, 9-7 MEC) snaps their two-game winning streak. Their final point total (61) is the lowest, in a game, this season. The Golden Eagles (13-9, 7-9 MEC) are on a three-game winning streak and are 4-2 over their last 6 games.
To start the contest,
Kyauta Taylor scored the first nine points of the game, hitting three shots beyond the three-point line. The Falcons went up by nine points, again, 11-2, when
Ja'Sean Lewis hit a jumper with 16:28 remaining.
Charleston would quickly get their offense going as they went on a 7-0 offensive output, making the score, 11-9.
The Falcons would not let the Golden Eagles get too comfortable, however, as Lewis grabbed an offensive rebound and made a layup,
Will Vorhees knocked down a three pointer and
Drew Scarberry was successful on back-to-back three-point attempts. NDC went up, 22-9 with 11:14 to go in the first half.
Charleston started to come back again and after Lewis hit a three at the 6:19-mark, the Falcons went up 30-21 over Charleston. UC then finished strong, outscoring Notre Dame, 9-5, to close the half.
NDC held onto a 35-30 lead at the halftime break. Notre Dame shot 44-percent from the field and 50-percent from behind the three-point line. Scarberry had 10 points, including three, three-pointers. Charleston shot 43-percent from the field in the first stanza.
The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game early in the second half, 36-35, after Keir Anderson hit back-to-back threes. Charleston went on to score the first 10 points of the second half.
Notre Dame would not be able to retake the lead the rest of the way, although they tied the game with 16:04 remaining in the game. Lewis knocked down a pair of free throws, which tied the game at 40.
At the 9:54-mark, Taylor hit a layup for Notre Dame and made it a one point game, 52-51, but they would not be able to get any closer down the stretch.
The Golden Eagles would answer with a 14-5 run, pushing the lead to 10 points, 66-56, with 3:27 remaining in the game.
Notre Dame's Lewis led the team, with 17 points and he grabbed eight rebounds. Taylor scored 15 points, on 5-for-10 (50-percent) shooting, and hauled in nine boards.
Scarberry added 15 points and Vorhees was held to 11 points and six rebounds. As a team, the Falcons shot just 34-percent, from the field, including shooting 23-percent in the second half.
For the Golden Eagles, Anderson led all scorers with 25 points as he shot 5-for-12 (42-percent) from three-point land. Jaylen Hinton added nine points and five rebounds.
Three players were tied with eight points. Charleston went 28-for-65 (43-percent) from the field in the game. They also outrebounded NDC by ten, 40-30.
The next opponent for the Falcons will be Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia on February 9. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
