Notre Dame takes down the Cardinals to extend winning streak to seven games

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons pulled another upset as they took down the team that is second in the conference standings, the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals, 74-59, on Thursday night.

The Falcons (14-12, 13-8 MEC) have now won seven straight games and have gone 12-5 since December. The Cardinals (21-6, 16-5 MEC) are now 3-2 in their last five games. They are 7-4 over their last 11 games, following a 14-2 start to the season.

Notre Dame was able to get to the hoop early on as they were able to score the first six points of the game on three layups, by Kelsey Miller, Marisa Finazzo and Terrina Robinson.

After Wheeling's Jaana Motton hit two free throws to cut the Falcons lead to four points, NDC went on a 7-3 run, going up 13-5 after a Jessie Stout layup with 3:15 remaining in the first quarter.

With 48-seconds left, Kyleigh Ramlow hit a three-pointer, assisted by Seina Adachi, and the Falcons went up by nine points, 21-12.

At the end of the first quarter, Notre Dame led, 21-15.

In the second quarter, Wheeling Jesuit was able to put together an 11-7 run, including three, three-pointers and with 4:57 remaining in the half, the Falcons lead was slashed to two points, 28-26.

The first tie in the game came at the 3:31-mark in the second quarter. Kylie Frizell hit a jumper to knot the game at 30.

NDC was leading by one point, 35-34, at halftime. Both teams shot very well in the first half. Notre Dame went 14-for-28 (50-percent) and Wheeling Jesuit shot 13-for-29 (49-percent). Both teams shot 50-percent from three-point range.

For Notre Dame, Miller had eight points in the first half and Ramlow had six points. For Wheeling Jesuit, Mariah Callen had 11 points while Frizell and Motton both had eight.

After the halftime break, the game remained close. With 7:11 left in the third quarter, Monica Burns netted two free throws, giving WJU their first lead of the game, 38-36.

The game was tied three separate times the rest of the way in the third quarter. In fact, at the end of the third quarter, the game was tied at 49, as Callen hit two free throws for Wheeling Jesuit with 18-seconds remaining in the third.

Following a bucket by Frizell to make the score 54-53, with the Falcons leading at the 7:51-mark in the fourth quarter, the Falcons went on an offensive tear.

Notre Dame's Miller split her two free throw attempts with 1:17 left, capping a 16-5 run and putting the Falcons up, 70-58.

With under a minute left in the game, Finazzo hit four free throws, pulling the Falcons farther ahead.

Notre Dame outscored WJU, 25-10 in the fourth quarter. Finazzo had 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting for the Falcons. Miller had 12 points and Adachi gave NDC 15 points and six rebounds. As a team, Notre Dame shot 23-for-52 (44-percent) from the field and 20-for-24 (83-percent) from the free throw line.

The Cardinals' Frizell had 18 points and seven rebounds. Callen had 15 points and five assists and Motton added 11 points and six rebounds. WJU went 20-for-58 (35-percent) from the field. They were held to 24-percent shooting, from the field, and shot 2-for-9 from three point range, in the second half.

The Falcons will come home to take on Urbana University, for Senior Day, on Feb. 25. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
