SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons have another disappointing second half and lose to the Concord University Mountain Lions, 95-87, on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (16-10, 10-10 MEC) have lost four of their last five games and have fallen to the .500-mark in conference play for the second time this season. The Mountain Lions (10-16, 6-14 MEC) have won four of the last five games and are 5-5 in their previous 10 contests.
Five minutes into the game, Notre Dame took a commanding, nine point advantage after
Will Vorhees hit a layup, putting the Falcons up, 16-7.
Jay Banyasz would expand the NDC lead to 11 points when he hit a layup with 13:21 remaining. That would be the biggest lead the Falcons would hold for the rest of the game.
Concord received immediate contributions from two players who came off the bench, as Babe Murphy and BJ Hamlet put together a 7-0 run. This cut the deficit to four points, 18-14.
By the 9:43-mark in the first half, a three-pointer by Michael Sanchez tied the game at 20. This was part of a major 13-2 run to get CU back into the game.
The two teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the first half. Concord took their first lead of the game, 30-29, with 5:28 remaining in the first half, on a layup by Hamlet.
Notre Dame held onto a 46-44 lead at the halftime break. Vorhees had 17 points for the Falcons, shooting 7-for-10 in the first half. The Falcons shot 19-for-31 (61-percent) from the field.
For the Mountain Lions, Tommy Bolte scored 15 points, which included going 3-for-3 from behind the three point line. Sanchez scored 10 points in the first half. As a team, Concord shot just 43-percent from the floor.
Concord scored the first four points of the second half, grabbing the lead, 48-46.
The game was tied at 48 when Vorhees hit a layup for Notre Dame. Over the next ten minutes, the game was tied 10 times and had six lead changes.
However, after Murphy nailed a three for the Mountain Lions with 8:16 left in the game, putting Concord up, 74-71, Notre Dame would not retake the lead or tie the game, again.
Bolte hit two free throws for CU with 18 seconds remaining to put Concord up by 10 points, 94-84.
The Falcons and Mountain Lions both grabbed 36 rebounds. Vorhees had 27 points, six rebounds and six assists for Notre Dame.
Kyauta Taylor had 24 points, including 16 in the second half, and also had eight rebounds.
Ja'Sean Lewis added 13 points, six rebounds and seven assists. NDC shot 56-percent from the field.
Concord had only three turnovers in the game and stole the ball nine times. CU had five players score in double-digits. Bolte led the way with 26 points, on 7-for-12 shooting from the floor and 5-for-5 shooting from three-point range. He also had nine rebounds. Stephen Thompson added 19 points and six boards.
The Falcons will travel to Wheeling, W.Va. to play Wheeling Jesuit University on Feb. 23. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
