Tough Road Trip

The Falcons grabbed an early lead, but could not hold on late against Fairmont State

Box Score
FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons could not overcome a late run by the No. 5 Fairmont State Fighting Falcons and lost on the road, 93-80, on Saturday afternoon.

The loss for Notre Dame (15-9, 9-9 MEC) is their third consecutive defeat, the longest losing streak of the season for NDC. They have a 3-7 record over their last 10 games. Fairmont State (23-1, 17-1 MEC) has bounced back, with two consecutive victories, following their only loss of the season on Feb. 4.

Notre Dame was able to score the first six points of the contest over the span of two minutes. NDC was able to get to the bucket during that quick run as Ja'Sean Lewis and Drew Scarberry hit layups and Jacob Sawman dunked the ball.

At the 15:21-mark in the first half, Scarberry hit a jump shot to put the Falcons up by six, 10-4. NDC took their largest lead of the half, 18-10, when Sawman put a layup in the basket with 12:19 remaining.

FSU took their first lead of the game, 29-27, with 7:38 to go as Steven Solomon was able to hit a layup on an assist by Thomas Wimbush.

Fairmont State went up 35-31, after a short 6-4 run, when Jason Jolly hit a jumper at the 5:38-mark.

But Notre Dame did not let the Fighting Falcons extend their lead too far. The two teams went back-and-forth, tying the game twice in the final four minutes of the first half. NDC was able to grab a slim 45-43 halftime lead, as Lewis tipped in a Scarberry miss, with seven seconds left.

For the Falcons at halftime, Will Vorhees was the only player to hit double-digits in scoring, as he had 10 points. Lewis had nine points and Scarberry added eight points. NDC shot 21-for-39 (54-percent) from the field. However, Notre Dame was able to connect on only one three point attempt.

For Fairmont State, Shammgod Wells had 14 points in the first half and his teammate, Wimbush gave FSU 12 points. The Fighting Falcons went 14-for-32 (44-percent) from the field, in the first half. They also shot 38-percent from three-point range.

Fairmont State scored the first five points when the two teams took the floor for the second half. Matt Bingaya hit a layup and then the free throw he was awarded after being fouled. Following the three point play, FSU stole the ball and Wimbush tipped it in, putting the Fighting Falcons up, 48-45.

NDC quickly went on a 4-0 run to retake the lead on two made free throws by Scarberry, giving the Falcons a 49-48 lead.

The lead was short lived, and with 12:10 remaining in the game, FSU had put together a 10-4 run, going back ahead, 58-53. Fairmont was able to get five points from D'Ondre Stockman during that time.

Notre Dame hung tough and just before the Media Timeout was called with 9:52 to go, a Vorhees jumper had pulled the Falcons within two points, 63-61.

However, Fairmont State started to pull away later in the second half. Jay Banyasz hit a layup at the 5:41-mark, putting the Falcons down by three points, 74-71. Over the next three minutes, FSU put together a 9-3 run, going back ahead by nine points, 83-74.

Fairmont went up by double-digits, 89-79, as Bingaya hit a layup with 1:09 to go in the game.

The Falcons shot the ball well, going 35-for-68 (52-percent) from the field, but only 3-for-22 behind the three-point line. Vorhees had 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Kyauta Taylor had 16 points and Scarberry had 14 points. Lewis added nine points and 11 rebounds.

Fairmont State shot 29-for-67 (43-percent) for the game and went 10-for-31 from the three-point line. FSU also outrebounded NDC, 40-38. Wimbush had 24 points and nine rebounds and Bingaya added 22 points and grabbed 11 boards. Both Stockman and Wells had 17 points.

Notre Dame will come home to take on the University of Virginia-Wise Cavaliers at the Murphy Gymnasium on Feb. 16. Tipoff time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
