Women's basketball heads to Hawaii for a two-game swing

This week: Notre Dame College travels to Honolulu, Hawaii to play two games on Sunday, December 17, and Monday, December 18. Sunday at 4 p.m. EST the Falcons will play Drury University then, on Monday, NDC will play at Chaminade at 10 p.m. EST.

Records: The Falcons are 8-3 after winning their last two games against West Virginia State and Charleston. Drury is 9-1 and is currently riding a seven-game winning streak. Chaminade is currently 0-4, and will play Hawaii Hilo on December 16.

Coaches Corner: Lauren Macer is in her first season as the head coach of the Notre Dame women's basketball program. She currently has a record of 8-3. Molly Miller is in her fourth season at the helm of Drury's program. Miller holds a record of 91-14 and has led her team to three-straight GVLC conference titles. Arthur King is also in his debut season with Chaminade. He is 0-4 this season.

Rankings: Drury is the No. 7 team in the December 12 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll. Neither of the other teams playing were ranked.

Series History: This will be the first time Notre Dame has played either of these teams.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame will play a top 10 team for the third time this season when they go up against Drury. So far this season, the Falcons are 0-2 against ranked teams after a nine-point loss to California (Pa.) and a 37-point loss to the reigning champions Ashalnd. Since those two games early in the season, NDC has gone 7-1. As the second-ranked team in the MEC in scoring (78.5 ppg), the Falcons will need to bring that to Hawaii to play with Drury as the Panthers' three closest games this season (including their lone loss) were against the only three teams to score more than 70 points against their strong defense. On the NDC defensive end, they will need to hold both of their opponents to under 80 as the Falcons are 1-3 when allowing more than 80 points, but 7-0 when allowing less.

Noting the Panthers: Drury held steady this week at No. 7 in the WBCA Coaches Poll after wins against Harding and Quincy. The game against Harding, a 65-57 win, was the lowest scoring game this season for the Panthers as they average nearly 80 points per game. DU benefits greatly from turnovers as they average a plus-6.7 turnover margin, which would rank second in the Mountain East Conference. Of their opponents 238 turnovers this season less than half are from steals (116). Compare that to Notre Dame, whose opponents have turned the ball over 206 times and over 60 percent are from steals (129). Drury, like NDC, is fairly young with only two seniors on the squad. Alice Heinzler and Heather Harman lead their team in both age and scoring as the two most experienced players are averaging 15.6 and 12.6 points per game, respectively.

Noting the Swords: Chaminade has struggled so far this season as the team has been out-scored by an average of 17.5 points this season. A big part of that is their lacking ability to rebound. The Swords average just 32.8 rebounds per game while their opponents average 52.0. This may be due to the lack in size on the Chaminade roster as their two tallest players are 5-foot-9. Notre Dame is 3-0 this season when out-rebounding opponents. Destiny Castro leads the Swords in scoring with 19 point per game this season. Castro is a high-volume shooter, taking over a quarter of her team's shots this season.
