Notre Dame men's basketball starts the season with the Conference Challenge

This week: Notre Dame College men's basketball travels to Fairmont, W.Va. for the Conference Challenge and will play a team from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and one from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. NDC will take on Millersville University on November 10 at 6 p.m. and then will play St. Augustine's University at 3 p.m. on November 11.

Records: The Falcons finished 2016-17 with a record of 16-13, overall, and 10-12 in the Mountain East Conference. Millersville was 9-17, overall, last season and St. Augustine's finished the season with a 13-16 record.

Coaches Corner: Tim Koenig enters his fifth season at the helm of the Falcons and holds a 64-57 overall record. He is 41-47 in the MEC. Casey Stitzel is in his second season at MU after coaching eight seasons at Delaware Valley University. MarQus Johnson is in his fourth season as head coach of SAU after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at the university. He has coached the team to a 36-48 record in three seasons.

Rankings: None of these teams were selected in the NABC Division II coaches' preseason rankings.

Series History: The Falcons have never played Millersville or St. Augustine's.

Noting the NDC Falcons: The Falcons were picked to finish fifth in the Mountain East Conference preseason poll and did receive one first place vote. Notre Dame was very successful in the non-conference portion of their schedule last season, as they went 6-0 in 2016-17. The team held a 7-6 record at home and on the road. Senior Will Vorhees shined last year as he was named to the All-MEC First Team, D2CCA All-Atlantic First Team and All-American Second Team, NABC All-District First Team and Hero Sports D-II All-American First Team. Vorhees was also was named Pre-Season All-American honorable mention by Street & Smith's. He was second in Division II in points-per-game (26.8), tied for 16th in rebounds-per-game (10.3), first in total field goals made (305), second in total points (777), and he was 19th in the nation in double-doubles (14). Vorhees led Notre Dame in minutes per game, points-per-game, field goals, free throws made, offensive and defensive rebounds, total rebounds and rebounds-per-game. Senior Kyauta Taylor was named All-MEC Second Team after last season. Taylor was tied for 21st in the nation in total threes made with 97 and he led the team with 43 steals. Junior Ja'Sean Lewis was tied for 17th in Division II with 66 blocks. Lewis also led the team in assists (151) and assists-per-game (5.2). Redshirt-sophomore Drew Scarberry led the team in three-point percentage (.451).The Falcons lost to Shepherd University 71-68 in the MEC Tournament. The Falcons averaged 82.3 points-per-game last season while shooting 47 percent from the field and 36 percent from three point land.

Noting the Marauders: The Marauders were picked to finish eighth in the PSAC East by the PSAC Preseason Poll after missing the tournament the past two seasons. They went 7-6 at home, but just 2-11 on the road in 2016-17. Marcus Adkison led the team in points with 401 and points-per-game at 15.4 per contest. Cornell Yarde II was tied with Adkison in field goals made (133). Jordan Greene led the team with 131 rebounds and was tied for the team lead with Kaba Arnadou with five rebounds-per-game. As a team, they averaged 30.9 rebounds-per-game. Yarde II helped out with 2.5 assists-per-game and led the team by playing 35 minutes-per-game. Markeith Mont had a field goal percentage of .559. Conrad Chambers led the team by shooting 82-percent from the free throw line. The Marauders shot 42-percent from the field and 35-percent from the three point line last season.

Noting the SAU Falcons: Despite ending the season by going 3-7 in their final 10 games, the Falcons made the CIAA Tournament. They beat Lincoln University 61-60 in the first round but lost to Fayetteville State University by a score of 86-80. Quincy January earned a spot on the All-CIAA Tournament Team, was a BOXTOROW D-II All American, selected to the NCCSIA All-State Men's Basketball First Team, named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar, and was named to the Preseason All-CIAA team. His teammate, Kenneth Collins was also named to the Preseason All-CIAA Team. January was tied for 19th in NCAA Division II, with Will Vorhees, for total rebounds last season with 300. He was also tied for 16th in rebounds-per-game in the country. January led the team in points-per-game (16.8), field goal percentage (.580), rebounds per game (10.3), steals (29) and blocks (45). Kenneth Collins was third on the team last season with 10.6 points-per-contest.
