Women's basketball tested in three games this week

This week: Notre Dame College hosts Ursuline and Wheeling Jesuit on Monday, November 27, and Wednesday, November 29, before traveling to West Liberty on Saturday, December 2. The Falcons will play both its home games at 5:30 p.m. while the game at West Liberty will tip at 2 p.m.

Records: The Falcons are 4-2, 2-0 MEC after winning against UVa-Wise and Daemen College last week. Ursuline is 3-2 after a win at Mercyhurst on November 22. Wheeling Jesuit is 1-4, 0-2 MEC with a loss most recently coming to Glenville State. West Liberty is 2-4, 1-1 MEC after splitting games last week with West Virginia Wesleyan (win) and Slippery Rock (loss).

Coaches Corner: Lauren Macer is in her first season as the head coach of the Notre Dame women's basketball program. Macer was a standout player for the Falcons and served as a graduate assistant and assistant coach before being named head coach this offseason. She currently has a record of 4-2. Shannon Sword is in her sixth season at the helm of the Ursuline team. The Arrows are 77-71 under Sword's leadership were a combined 48-12 in the last two seasons. Debbie Buff is in her seventh season at Wheeling Jesuit. Buff is 100-80 in her time at WJU, including 52-13 over the last two years. Kyle Cooper is in his first season at West Liberty. He spent the last four seasons with WLU and has a 2-4 record in his first year.

Rankings: None of the teams playing this week were ranked in the November 21 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll.

Series History: NDC is 1-2 against Ursuline since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in the 2012-13 season. The Falcons are 5-4 against both Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty. Last season, NDC was 0-1 against Ursuline, 1-1 against WJU and 2-0 against WLU.

Noting the Falcons: After suffering back-to-back losses against the current No. 1 and No. 4 teams in the country, Notre Dame has gone on a three-game winning streak. In those three games, the Falcons have outscored their opponents 238-207, including 78-49 in the third quarter. NDC has utilized three-point shots throughout the season as they have averaged 10.2 per game (ranks fifth in NCAA Division II). Last week the Falcons tied the program record for most 3s in a game against UVa-Wise with 14 before breaking the record at Daemen with 16. With the win against Wise, NDC started 2-0 in MEC play for the first time since joining the league in the 2013-14 season.

Noting the Arrows: Ursuline has won 48 games over the last two seasons behind forward Laney Lewis who won Great Midwest Player of the Year back-to-back seasons. Lewis averaged 16.1 points and 11.8 rebounds last season as she had 22 double-doubles. This season, Lewis is averaging 18.0 points and 12.8 rebounds as the third leading scorer on the team. Lewis is also assisting 6.8 field goals per game this year. The senior is one of just two Division II players who have completed a triple-double this season.

Noting the Cardinals: Wheeling Jesuit is coming off back-to-back MEC Tournament Championships, but the 1-4 start to the year is the worst for the Cardinals since the 2013-14 season. Despite returning three of its top four scorers from last season, WJU has started MEC play 0-2 for just the second time in school history. The Cardinals have never been snipers from distance as they have been outshot from beyond the arc in each season since Debbie Buff took over, but this season the gap has grown. Opponents have made nearly double (10.2 average) the amount of 3s as the Wheeling Jesuit players (5.4).

Noting the Hilltoppers: West Liberty, like Notre Dame, has made a home for itself outside the three-point line this season. While NDC ranks fifth in the NCAA with 10.2 threes per game, WLU ranks 30th with 8.7. The Falcons boast Seina Adachi who ranks 14th in three-point field goals made (16), but West Liberty has two players in the top 50 in McKenna Shives (14) and Brandi Beader (13). The Hilltoppers have been excellent defending the perimeter this season, allowing just 18 three-point makes this season on 77 attempts (.234).
