Notre Dame men's basketball plays two more home games this week

This week: Notre Dame College men's basketball will stay home and play the University of Virginia's College at Wise on November 20 at 7:30 p.m. and then will take on Penn State Greater Allegheny College at 12 p.m. on November 22 in the Murphy Gymnasium.

Records: The Falcons currently sit at 2-2 on the year and are 1-0 in the MEC while UVa-Wise is 1-3 and 1-0 MEC. Penn State Greater Allegheny is 5-2 this season.

Coaches Corner: Tim Koenig enters his fifth season at the helm of the Falcons and holds a 66-59 overall record. He is 42-47 in the MEC. Blake Mellinger is at the helm of the Cavaliers for his fifth season and has a record of 27-90, overall, and 19-70 in MEC play. Tyler Care is in his fourth season as head coach of PSGAC. Last year, Care led the team to a 23-6 overall record which included winning the Penn State University Athletic Conference Tournament.

Rankings: None of these teams were selected in the NABC Division II coaches' rankings.

Series History: The Falcons are 8-1 all-time against the Cavaliers in a series that started in 2013-14. They have never played Penn State Allegheny.

Noting the Falcons: The Falcons went 1-1 last week. Notre Dame lost a tough game to Roberts Wesleyan College by a score of 79-76 on November 15. After trailing 41-30 at halftime, RWC scored 49 points and shot 45-percent in the second half. For NDC, Ja'Sean Lewis scored six points, dished seven assists and grabbed a program-record 25 rebounds in the loss. He leads the team with 14 rebounds-per-game and 5 assists-per-game. Kyauta Taylor, who is averaging 23 points-per-game, scored 19 points, Drew Scarberry scored 12 points and Angelo Cugini recorded 11 points and seven rebounds. Head coach Tim Koenig said that his team will have to finish defensive possessions and not give up second and third chances in the second half of games. The Falcons did just that in their 86-76 home opening win over Concord University on November 18. After allowing 49 points in the first half on 50-percent shooting, the NDC defense held the Mountain Lions to 27 points and CU shot just 21-percent in the second half. In his first start of the season, Will Vorhees scored 23 points in the second half and finished the game with 33 points and 10 rebounds along with a 15-for-18 performance at the free throw line. Taylor and Halil Parks each had 11 points and Lewis added eight points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Last week's MEC Player of the Week, Tommy Bolte, did not play for Concord. In total this season, the Falcons have outscored their opponents by ten points (170-160) in the second half. Lewis is second in NCAA Division II in rebounds-per-game and fourth in total rebounds.

Noting the Cavaliers: UVa-Wise lost their first three games of the season, which included a defeat at the hands of Carson Newman University by a score of 88-65 on November 15. CNU, who was 3-0 after the win, scored 42 points in the first half and 46 in the second. Taiwo Badmus, who leads the team with 15.8 points-per-contest, led the team with 24 points and seven rebounds while shooting 7-for-18 from the field. Chance Sheffey was the only other player to score in double digits as he had 11 points. Even though the Cavaliers shot 46-percent in the second half, they shot 32-percent, overall, after struggling in the first half. University of Virginia-Wise earned their first victory of the season, 71-64, against Urbana University on November 18. UVa-Wise outscored UU by eight points in the second half. Badmus again led the team with 29 points and 12 assists. He leads the team in rebound-per-game this season, grabbing 7.3 per game. Sheffey had 14 points and the Cavaliers put together a field goal percentage of 52-percent in the second half. On the boards, UVa-Wise is getting outrebounded by nearly four rebounds-per-game.

Noting the Nittany Lions: Jordan Payne scored 30 points and made eight three pointers in Penn State Greater Allegheny's 109-93 loss to Clarion University on November 15. The Nittany Lions allowed 55 points in the first half and 54 in the second half. Curtis Newby, who averages 9.4 rebounds-per-game, had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out. George Prota recorded 13 points. Mhonte Newsome went 3-for-3 off the bench and scored seven points. The University of Cincinnati-Clermont beat PSGA by a score of 97-81 on November 17. The Nittany Lions allowed 62 points in the second half. Payne, who leads the team with 24.7 points-per-game, scored 23 points, Khari Hicks added 12 points and seven rebounds and Newby had 10 points and 13 rebounds, including six offensive rebounds and Prota scored 14 points. In a 98-77 win over Southern State Community College on November 18, Payne had 40 points. Markis Rivera added 13 points and Koran Fleming had 11 points after coming in off the bench.
