Women's basketball travels to reigning champs, starts MEC play

This week: Notre Dame College travels to NCAA Division II defending National Champions Ashland on Tuesday, November 14 (6 p.m.), before starting Mountain East Conference play at home against Concord on Saturday, November 18 (2 p.m.). The Falcons play an exhibition game on Thursday, November 16, at Ohio at 11 a.m.

Records: The Falcons started the season off 1-1 after a win against Mercyhurst and a loss against No. 10 California (Pa.) last weekend. Ashland is 2-0 after wins against Ohio Dominican and Cedarville. Concord is 1-1 after a loss to Clarion and a win against Lock Haven.

Coaches Corner: Lauren Macer is in her first season as the head coach of the Notre Dame women's basketball program. She currently has a record of 1-1. Robyn Fralick enters her third season with Ashland. Fralick has a 70-2 career record after going 37-0 last season. Kenny Osborne is in his 18th season as the head coach of the Concord Mountain Lions. In his time with Concord, Osborne has a record of 221-264 (24-64 MEC). He has an overall coaching record of 232-278 (12-15 at Bluefield State in 1997-98).

Rankings: Ashland was ranked No. 1 in the October 31 Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll. Neither of the other teams playing received votes.

Series History: NDC is 0-1 against Ashland after a 92-55 loss at home last season. The Falcons are 8-0 against Concord since joining the MEC in the 2013-14 season.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame opened its season with an exciting come-from-behind overtime victory against Mercyhurst before a close battle with No. 10 California (Pa.). The Falcons have struggle shooting this season with a .345 field goal percentage including .259 from beyond the arc. NDC has made up for its FG% by getting up 142 shots in the first two games compared to opponents' 108. This is due to the defensive pressure the team exhibited, forcing 52 turnover during the MEC/PSAC Challenge. Katie Karalic (8-12) and Kim Cook (10-19) have led the team with shot percentages of .667 and .526, respectively.

Noting the Eagles: Ashland has been a leader in NCAA Division II women's basketball for quite some time now. The Eagles haven't lost a game since February 4, 2016 and haven't lost at home since December 6, 2014. AU had a close game at Cedarville last weekend as the Eagles were down 78-77 with 13 seconds left to go. After a Cedarville turnover, Ashland missed a layup with seven second left, got the offensive rebound and made a jump shot at the buzzer to win the game 79-78. Laina Snyder took both of the final shots. Cedarville outrebounded Ashland 45-36, but ultimately lost due to one of its 27 turnovers.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Riley Fitzwater has led Concord in scoring this season averaging 15 points while making 14 of her 18 attempts. Fitzwater has also averaged 11.5 rebounds per game while adding four total blocks. In both of the Mountain Lions' games this season, the team has distributed the ball well as four players hit the double-digit scoring mark in each game. Concord hasn't shot much from outside this season as the team has only attempted 35 shots from three-point range (second least in the MEC). The Mountain Lions rank eighth in the MEC in 3-point field goal percentage (.229) and ninth in the conference with just eight shots made from distance.

ESPN3 at Ohio: The Notre Dame exhibition game at Ohio will be broadcast live via ESPN3. The game on Thursday, November 16, will matchup the Division II Falcons with the Division I Bobcats. Tip-off is scheduled for 11 a.m.
