FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Notre Dame College received 37 points from senior
Kyauta Taylor, but the Falcons dropped their season opener by a score of 107-99 to Millersville University, in double-overtime, on Friday evening.
The Falcons (0-1) and Marauders (1-0) were locked in a tight battle throughout the first half. After the game was tied at five, the Falcons went on an 11-7 run with the help of nine points by Taylor. The Falcons led 16-12 at the 14:22-minute mark.
Millersville, who got their first win in a season opener since 2011, fell down by as many as five points (19-14) before they clawed their way back into the contest. With 11 minutes to go in the first half, the Marauders had taken a 20-19 lead following a made free throw by Conrad Chambers.
The Falcons would string together the next seven points with a free throw by redshirt-sophomore
Drew Scarberry, a jumper by Taylor and a three-pointer by freshman
Levi Frankland to go up 26-20 with 8:16 remaining before halftime.
Millersville had the final run of the half, going into the halftime break with a 9-2 run and a 40-37 lead over the Falcons.
Right after the intermission, NDC used a three by Frankland, a dunk by junior
Ja'Sean Lewis and a three by Taylor to go ahead of MU 45-40 with 17:51 remaining in regulation. The Falcons eventually pushed their advantage to ten points (54-44), with just under 15 minutes to play, following a free throw make by Taylor.
The Marauders did not go away and slowly crawled back into the game. By the 12:54 mark, a three-pointer by Andre Watkins cut the NDC lead to two points (54-52).
Notre Dame's longstanding lead vanished when Millersville took only their second lead of the half with 7:35 remaining in the stanza (68-67).
The game was tied twice in the final minute and Notre Dame took the lead once before the buzzer rang. Mark Perry made two clutch free throws for Millersville with nine seconds left, tying the game at 81.
In the first overtime period, the Falcons had the ball late with a chance to win the game, but could not convert with a bucket. Both teams scored nine points and went into double-overtime tied at 90.
Within the first three minutes of the second overtime, the teams combined for six lead changes in the battle for a hard fought victory. However, Millersville pulled away with nearly a minute to go, follwoing a layup and a foul that sent Watkins to the line. He hit the free throw. The Marauders would hit five more free throws with less than a minute to play and held Notre Dame to three points in the final 2:22 of the game.
"A tough loss tonight," said head coach
Tim Koenig, after the game. "We did not play well today and we didn't make key plays at crucial times of the game. It is early and it is a long season. We will get better. We are so fortunate to be able to come back, right away, and have the opportunity to play a very good St. Augustine team."
Kyauta Taylor scored 37 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 47 minutes of action. He shot 55-percent from the field. Frankland scored 17 points and senior
Will Vorhees, who did not start, played in 30 minutes and recorded 15 points and six rebounds. Redshirt-junior
Angelo Cugini also had a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 boards. NDC shot 46-percent from the field, including 63-percent in the first half.
For Millersville, Chambers scored 29 points, Perry had 20 points and Caden Najdawi put together 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Mauraders shot 45-percent from the field and had 22 steals.
Notre Dame will remain in Fairmont, W.Va. to wrap up the Conference Challenge as they take on St. Augustine's University tomorrow, November 11. The game will tip-off at 3 p.m.
