SALEM, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College men's and women's diving teams competed in their first events over the weekend. The men's team earned a victory against Salem International while the women split their matchups against Salem and California (Pa.).
The men's competition was won 136-115 by the Falcons after coming in first in eight of the 14 events. NDC won the 200-yard medley relay and seven individual events.
Freshman
Joshua Grzincic won two distance events with a time of 11:16.71 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and a time of 5:26.95 in the 500-yard freestyle. Head coach
Stephanie Gyurke was pleased with Grzincic's performance as he was not a distance swimmer before arriving on campus.
Also making his debut with Notre Dame was junior transfer
Seth Knights. Knights won two events as well with times of 21.58 in the 50-yard fly and 49.47 in the 100-yard freestyle.
The women went 1-1 on the day with a 116-60 win against Salem International and a 170-58 loss against Cal. Pa.
NDC won two events on the women's side, which included the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard individual medley. The relay was won with a time of 4:01.23 by Brionna Costanza,
Amanda Cameron,
Madeline Colby and
Kaitlin Wright. Wright also won the individual medley with a time of 2:23.90.
The meet was Gyurke's first as a head coach and she was able to see many positives and also some areas that need improvement.
"I am very happy with how well the team got behind one another and supported each other," Gyurke said. "They fed off of that support and managed to put their heads down and finish to the wall first.
"We still have a long way to go before the season is over and a lot of things to work on but I see a lot of potential in our team. I am excited to see where this year will take us and what they manage to accomplish."
The teams will compete again at home against Urbana on Friday, November 3, at 5 p.m.
