Maczuzak breaks record in win at Wise

WISE, Va. - After a back and forth throughout five sets, the Notre Dame College volleyball team won it's second-straight MEC game at UVa.-Wise 3-2. Senior outside hitter, Melissa Maczuzak led the team with 34 points, which included a new school record 33 kills.

After losing the first set 25-14, the Falcons turned things around for a 25-12 win in the second set to tie things up. NDC had found its rhythm and won the second set 25-17. In the second and third sets alone, Maczuzak had 13 kills and an attack percentage of .462.

"Mel had a great match and broke her own school record," said head coach Troy Haught. "She showed great leadership throughout the entire match."

Wise took the fourth set 25-17 to force a fifth and final set. The Cavaliers looked to be in control early in the fifth set and took a 7-3 lead, but the Falcons came back to close the gap 7-6. Things went back and forth, like they had in the sets prior, but NDC scored three-straight points to win 18-16.

"We played up and down, but kept fighting," Haught said. "Our service was strong, as was our serve receive. That really sets everything else up for success."

On the offensive end, Maczuzak was joined by Natalie Spadaro and Mary Kate McHugh who had 15 kills and 9 kills, respectively. Paige Staudacher had a successful game as well, assisting on 55 of the team's 62 kills.

Defensively, Ali Kaeberlein led the team with 25 digs while Maczuzak has 20 and Riley Coleman had 13.

Notre Dame will be back in action on Tuesday, October 17, as the team heads to Painesville, Ohio for two games against Roberts Wesleyan and Lake Erie.
