PAINESVILLE, Ohio – On Lake Erie College's campus Notre Dame College beat Roberts Wesleyan College 3-0 in their first game of the day, but then fell to Lake Erie 3-0 in the last game of the night.
The Falcons (10-13) were on a three game winning streak after beating RWC, their longest winning streak of the season. The win also represented their second three-set sweep this campaign. The Redhawks (1-23) have now lost eight consecutive games and still have not won on the road this season. The Storm (17-7) has won three straight games and seven of their last 10 contests.
The first three points of the initial set against Roberts Wesleyan came off of three kills by Notre Dame sophomore
Natalie Spadaro and three assists by sophomore
Paige Staudacher. The Falcons would go up 9-3 after a service ace by senior
Melissa Maczuzak. Later in the match, a 4-0 run would expand the Falcons lead to 10 (18-8). NDC would go on to win 25-14 as they closed it out with a service error by the Redhawks.
The second set was a tight battle even with a couple long runs. The set was tied at six when NDC went on a 12-3 run, putting the Falcons up 18-9. Immediately following that run, Roberts Wesleyan College responded by scoring 11 of the next 15 points and clawed their way back to a 22-20 deficit. The Falcons closed it out quickly, however, with two kills by sophomore
Erin Daugherty and a kill by Maczuzak NDC won the set 25-20.
RWC took an early 7-4 advantage in the third set, but Notre Dame worked their way back into the game. Roberts Wesleyan's last lead was 8-7. The Falcons would finish the game outscoring the Redhawks 18-7 to win the set 25-15 and win the match.
Courtney Taylor had 11 kills, 11.5 points and a .476 attack percentage for the Redhawks. Rachel Holmes recorded 10 digs.
Sophomore
Mary Kate McHugh had a .421 attack percentage, nine kills and 11.5 points and Maczuzak recorded 12 kills and 15 points. Staudacher had 33 assists and Spadaro reached a .278 attack percentage. The Falcons finished with an attack percentage of .344 as a team, their highest of any game in 2017.
"We were able to put our hitters on one on one blocks a lot giving them a lot more options on where to attack and we were in system most of the match so we were able to utilize all of our hitters," said head coach
Troy Haught.
In the first set against the Storm, the Falcons hung around and played tough. Nearly the entire match, the largest deficit for Notre Dame was three points. Late in the match, Lake Erie College went on a 3-0 that put them ahead by a score of 22-17. NDC fought back but eventually fell, 25-22.
The second set was nearly identical as neither team could expand their lead by more than three points. The Falcons capitalized on four Lake Erie mistakes (three attack errors and a bad set) and a Maczuzak kill to put together a 5-0 run and take a 15-13 lead. Later in the match, a kill by Lake Erie's Shannon Holsinger pushed LEC over the edge for a 25-23 victory.
Lake Erie grabbed the momentum in the third set and jumped on top 7-3. Down 12-9, the Falcons put together a run with a kill by McHugh and three kills by Spadaro to take their first lead of the set, 13-12. NDC continued to battle and even tied the game at 19 but the Storm pulled away for the 25-20 set win and a sweep of the match.
Lake Erie's Bethany Fisher had 16 kills, 18.5 points and an attack percentage of .429. Brooke Peiffer recorded 11 kills and 12.5 points.
Maczuzak earned 18 kills and 19 points for the Falcons while sophomore
Ali Kaeberlein added 14 digs.
"Lake Erie was a point for point match and we, again, played very consistently," Haught described after both of the games. "If we don't make a couple errors, the sets could have went our way. We talked about how consistent we were, but a few errors can shift a set. Again, I feel we are improving every day."
The Falcons now come home to play Glenville State College on October 20. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the Murphy Gymnasium.
