ATHENS, W.Va. – Notre Dame College earned their first conference victory on Friday with a 3-1 win over Concord University in a game where NDC had an attack percentage of .260 and won the first two sets by six and eight points, respectively, before winning the fourth set by three points.
The Falcons (8-12, 1-5 MEC) and Glenville State were the only teams without a conference victory until today. NDC also snaps a four game losing streak. Coming off of a five game winning streak near the end of September, the Mountain Lions (9-13, 3-3) have struggled, dropping four of their last five contests.
The first set was tied at three and then Notre Dame scored four straight points on three kills and a ball handling error. Concord immediately scored the next six points to retake the lead 9-7. From there, the teams went back-and-forth on the scoreboard. The turning point in the set came when the game was tied at 16 and Notre Dame regained the advantage on an attack error by Alexi Pranckus. After taking the lead, NDC would score eight of the next 11 points to win the game by a score of 25-19.
NDC built a bigger lead in the second set. Trailing 5-4, the Falcons put together seven consecutive points, which included two kills by freshman
Lloyana Hunter, two kills by sophomore
Mary Kate McHugh and two service aces by senior
Melissa Maczuzak. NDC would continue to play exceptionally well and won the set 25-17.
Concord tried to turn the game around in the third set, leading most of the way. After the Falcons took a 2-0 advantage, Concord scored the next three points. Once ahead, the Mountain Lions allowed NDC to take the game at three, but never gave the lead away. CU beat Notre Dame 25-19 in the third set.
In the fourth set, Notre Dame, again, took a 2-0 lead. Concord fought back in a big way after trailing 3-2. CU scored six of the next seven points to go ahead 8-4. Later in the set, Concord grew their lead to five points, 18-13. NDC called a timeout and then started playing inspired volleyball. Maczuzak scored twice on two kills after the timeout and that would be the beginning of a 9-0 scoring run to put NDC up 22-18. The Falcons would win the set 25-22 and finish with the match victory, three sets-to-one.
"We served very aggressively and kept them out of system a lot and took advantage of it," head coach
Troy Haught said. "We blocked well and had some great hustle plays. Our serve receive was very strong and we were able to mix it up a lot."
For the Falcons, Maczuzak had 18 kills, 15 digs and 21.5 points while McHugh recorded 18 kills, 14 digs and had an attack percentage of .317. Sophomore
Natalie Spadaro had 12 kills and sophomore
Paige Staudacher helped out with 54 assists.
Emily Brooks led the Mountain Lions with 13 kills and 15 points. Shea Hoffman had a hit percentage of .308 and Lindsay Maddox recorded 16 digs.
Notre Dame will travel to Wise, Va. to play the University of Virginia's College at Wise tomorrow, October 13. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
