SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats shot 55-percent from the field and defeated the Notre Dame Falcons, 75-70, in a back-and-forth affair on Thursday evening.
For the Falcons (2-9, 1-5 MEC) the defeat was their fourth consecutive loss. The win for the Bobcats (5-5, 5-2 MEC) is their first victory since Dec. 3 and ends a two game losing streak.
The Falcons took the first lead of the game and expanded it to five points, 8-3, after
Katie Karalic hit a layup with 6:12 remaining in the first quarter.
West Virginia Wesleyan then went on a 10-5 run to tie the game at 13 with Stacy Remer scoring four of the 10 points during the Bobcats run. The Falcons found themselves down, 16-15 after the first stanza.
After three quick lead changes within the first minute and a half of the second quarter, the Falcons then went on a run of their own. After falling behind 18-17 with 9:28 to go in the first half, Notre Dame ripped off the next 12 points to go up 29-18 after a
Seina Adachi layup. NDC outscored the Bobcats, 20-15 in the quarter and took a 35-31 lead into the half.
The Falcons looked strong to start the third quarter and went up 46-37 following a
Kim Cook three-point play with 5:55 remaining in the quarter. West Virginia Wesleyan went on a tear, scoring the next 12 points and retaking a 49-46 advantage, late in the third quarter.
The Falcons, however, closed the quarter strong, going on a 10-3 run to counter the Bobcats' run.
As the two teams entered the fourth quarter, Notre Dame led 56-52. And after a Lana Long layup for the Bobcats tied the game at 63, Cook hit a three pointer and a layup to put the Falcons up, 68-63.
West Virginia Wesleyan got the last laugh as they held NDC to two points over the final 2:57.
Notre Dame shot 41-percent from the field, as a team. Cook scored 13 points and shot 5-for-6 (83-percent) overall. Adachi scored 25 points while shooting 9-for-18 (50-percent) from the field.
For the Bobcats, Tara Goldman, Stacy Remer and Rachel Vandertoolen all scored in double digits. Vandertoolen shot 9-for-13 (69-percent) from the field and 3-for-4 (75-percent) from behind the three-point line.
The Falcons will travel to Athens, West Virginia on Sunday, Jan. 8, to battle Concord University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
