Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio –
Will Vorhees was one point away from tying a Notre College record for points in a game, as he scored 44 points in a 97-93 victory over Glenville State at Murphy Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.
The Falcons (9-2, 3-2 MEC) have now won six in a row, and are out to their best start in nine years, while the loss for the Pioneers (5-4, 2-3 MEC) snapped a five-game winning streak.
Vorhees's 40-plus point scoring performance marked the second game in a row that a Falcon scored 40 or more, as
Kyauta Taylor tied a program record with 45 in NDC's last game against Malone before the winter break.
He wasn't the only big man to have a huge night, as
Oliver Megins delivered a career high, 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and a team high, six assists.
The opening half was very tightly contested, as neither side was able to pull away. Notre Dame led by as many as six (30-24) after a Taylor layup at the 6:08-mark in the opening half, but that turned out to be the largest lead of the half on either side.
The lead changed hands 12 times altogether in the contest, and the second half turned out to be just as exciting as the first. Notre Dame was in the lead for the first nine minutes of the second half, and eventually took their lead into double digits (69-58) after a Vorhees layup with 14:35 left in the contest, before the Pioneers chipped away at the lead.
With 8:51 left in the game, Terry Davis Jr. hit a 3-pointer to give the Pioneers a 79-78 advantage, which was their first lead of the second half, and they maintained a lead for the next five minutes, until Vorhees tied the game at 86-86 with 4:39 to play.
The two Vorhees free throws came in the middle of a huge, 10-0 run for the Falcons, getting six of those points from the charity stripe. The aforementioned 10-0 run concluded with a layup from
Ja'Sean Lewis to give NDC a 92-86 lead with 1:08 to play, and the Falcons never looked back, using a pair of free throws from Lewis in the final minute to help close it out.
In addition to his 44 points, Vorhees added 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. He and Vorhees were the only two to score in double figures on an night where the Falcons shot the ball extremely well, shooting 56.5-percent (35-for-62) from the floor and passed the ball very well, finishing with 26 assists.
Notre Dame will play host to West Virginia Wesleyan College in their next contest at Murphy Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 5, at 7:30 p.m.
