GLENVILLE, W.Va – The Notre Dame Falcons took down another Mountain East Conference opponent, as they hung on to beat the Glenville State Pioneers on the road, 84-76, on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Falcons (14-6, 8-6 MEC), halt their two-game losing streak and they complete the season series sweep of Glenville State. Notre Dame now has a 6-4 record in the month of January. The Pioneers (8-10, 5-9 MEC) have now lost four consecutive games, and hold a 3-7 record over their last 10 games.
Glenville State grabbed the early lead and held the lead through the first five-and-a-half minutes of the contest. The Falcons were able to catch the Pioneers and tie the game at nine with 14:22 to go in the first half.
The two teams tied the game again, this time at 11 with 12:34 remaining in the first half. Notre Dame would then score the next 11 points and the Falcons led Glenville, 22-11, by the 10 minute mark. During this offensive surge,
Will Vorhees gave the Falcons seven points.
NDC didn't look back as they increased their lead to 14 points when
Kyauta Taylor hit a three-point field goal to put the Falcons up, 35-21, with 5:01 to go in the first half.
Notre Dame led 46-33 at the halftime break. Vorhees had 19 points and five rebounds while Taylor gave the Falcons 13 points. Both players went 3-for-4 from three-point range in the first half.
Once the second half started, Glenville State worked themselves back into the game and would not go away. The Pioneers went on a 10-2 run to cut the Falcons lead to five points, 48-43, with 14:38 remaining in the game.
By the 11:42-mark in the second half, a layup by Glenville's Terry Davis Jr. made it a two point game, 53-51. This is the closest the Pioneers had gotten since the 12:16-mark in the first half.
Glenville State would cut the deficit to two points one more time, 64-62, with 7:08 remaining. But this would be as close as the Pioneers could get the rest of the way.
For NDC, Taylor came up clutch by knocking down five free throws, between the 6:34-mark and the 5:36-mark in the second half, expanding the lead from two points to seven points.
With under a minute remaining in the contest, the Falcons'
Drew Scarberry and
Ja'Sean Lewis hit four free throws, each, and the Falcons were able to pull away.
Notre Dame's Taylor led both teams in scoring with 29 points, which included shooting 4-for-7 (57-percent) from three-point land. Vorhees had 27 points and six rebounds, Lewis added eight points and 14 boards while Scarberry had 13 points in the game. The Falcons shot 36 free throws, one less than their season high, and made 28 for a free throw percentage of 78-percent. NDC outrebounded Glenville, 46-38, as well.
For Glenville State, Brett Morris had 24 points and seven rebounds and Darhius Nunn added 12 points and eight assists. The Pioneers were held to 39-percent shooting from the field, including shooting just 32-percent in the first half.
Notre Dame will come back home to face the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State at the Murphy Gymnasium, next Wednesday, Feb. 1. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
