Second Half Takeoff

The Falcons shot 56-percent and scored 49 points in the second half to secure a victory

URBANA, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons used another big offensive night from Will Vorhees and Kyauta Taylor and timely defensive lockdowns, to secure another road win over the Urbana Blue Knights, 96-75, on Thursday evening.

With the win, the Falcons (13-4, 7-4 MEC) snap their two game losing skid. Notre Dame is now 8-2 in their last 10 games. The Blue Knights (8-9, 3-8 MEC) have now dropped three consecutive games. They've also been held to 77 points, or fewer, during the losing streak. They are 6-4 over their last 10 games.

In the first five minutes of the game, neither team was able to run away on the scoreboard. In fact, the largest lead by either team was two points, during that span.

With 14:31 to go in the first half, Ja'Sean Lewis made a free throw, putting the Falcons up, 12-9, to break the trend.

At the 13:06-mark in the first half, Notre Dame was able to expand their lead. A three-point basket by Drew Scarberry put the Falcons up by five points, 18-13.

Urbana responded, scoring the next 10 points and going up, 23-18. The Blue Knights' Carlas Jackson and Charles Sweatt-Washington scored four points, each, during the run.

Notre Dame was able to steady the ship and retake the lead. Urbana's last lead of the half came at the 8:31-mark when they led, 25-24. On the other end, Lewis was fouled as he converted on a layup attempt. He made the free throw and the score was 27-25, in favor of the Falcons.

At the 2:32-mark in the first half, Jay Banyasz hit a layup to put Notre Dame up by seven, 45-38, tying their largest lead of the half.

And at the halftime break, NDC led, 47-43, over Urbana.

Notre Dame shot extremely well, 58-percent, from the field in the first half. Urbana held a 45-percent field goal percentage.

Lewis had nine points and seven rebounds in the first half. Vorhees poured in 19 points.

Notre Dame put their foot on the gas pedal in the second half. After a free throw by AJ Washington closed the Urbana deficit to one point, 47-46, the Falcons did not let the Blue Knights get any closer.

A free throw by Vorhees capped a 13-0 run and put the Falcons up, 60-46, with 14:45 to go in the game.

Jahmere Howze made one free throw for Urbana before the Falcons went on another long run. Notre Dame poured in the next 12 points and went up by 25, 72-47, with 9:58 remaining in the second half.

Notre Dame took their largest lead in the game, with 3:39 remaining in the game, when Vorhees tipped the ball into the basket. At that point, the Falcons were leading, 88-61, up by 27 points.

The Blue Knights were held to 32 points in the second half and shot 26-percent from the field.

For the Falcons, Vorhees had 42 points and nine rebounds in the game. He now has recorded 40, or more, points in three different games in January and is averaging 32 points per game this month. Lewis had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor also had 23 points in the contest.

Notre Dame shot a red-hot 57-percent from the field for the game. They also cleaned up the glass, outrebounding Urbana, 50-30.

For Urbana, Howze poured in 11 points, Sweatt-Washington had 12 points, Washington added 13 and Jackson led the team in scoring with 15 points. For the game, the Blue Knights shot only, 35-percent from the field and 6-for-34 (18-percent) from the three point line.

Notre Dame will come home to face No. 4 West Liberty University, on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Murphy Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
