SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons snapped a four-game home losing streak on Saturday afternoon, with a 73-67 victory over Fairmont State at Murphy Gymnasium.
For the Falcons (4-10, 3-6 MEC), the victory was their first at home since Nov. 23, while the loss for Fairmont State (8-7, 5-4 MEC), snapped a three-game winning streak, and was their fifth in six games away from home.
Notre Dame shot very well in the fourth quarter, hitting on 7-of-13 (53.8-percent) shots in the final stanza, outscoring Fairmont State, 20-10 during that stretch to pull away for the victory.
While Fairmont State took the early lead, scoring on their opening possession, Notre Dame converted on their next two possessions, getting a layup from
Kelsey Miller and a 3-pointer from
Seina Adachi to take a 5-3 advantage, and they never trailed the rest of the opening quarter. They led by as many as six (12-6) and found themselves ahead, 17-14 after one.
The Falcon lead reached double digits (26-16) just over three minutes into the second quarter, as they went on a 9-2 run, which was capped by a
Terrina Robinson fast break layup. However, Fairmont State came storming back, answering with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes of the contest to regain the lead, 27-26.
The two teams went back and forth over the final four minutes of the half, but Notre Dame used a big 3-pointer from
Kyleigh Ramlow with 37 seconds remaining to give them a 35-33 advantage, which they took into the half.
Notre Dame remained in the lead for most of the third quarter, leading by as many as seven, until Fairmont State came storming back. FSU took a 53-51 lead with just over two-and-a-half minutes left in the quarter, and took a 57-53 lead into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame not only shot the ball very well, but also played great defense, limiting FSU to just a 21.4-percent (3-for-14) clip from the floor. FSU led for the first few minutes of the quarter, until
Jessie Stout hit a layup at the 6:31-mark to give Notre Dame a 59-58 advantage. Stout's layup came right in the middle of an incredible 11-0 run for the Falcons, which concluded with another layup from Stout at the 2:53-mark, giving NDC a 69-60 advantage.
While FSU was able to trim the deficit to four (69-65) with 1:22 remaining, they were not able to get any closer, as the Falcons hung on for the win.
Stout led the Falcons with 18 points, on an 8-of-9 (88.8-percent) shooting performance, adding five rebounds and four assists. Miller had 13 points to go along with five rebounds, and Ramlow scored all 15 of her points via the long ball, shooting 71.4-percent (5-for-7) from beyond the arc.
Kim Cook had four steals, four assists, and led NDC with 11 rebounds.
The Falcons are in action again on Monday, Jan. 16, when they play host to Shepherd at Murphy Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for Noon.
