Falcons split slugfest with Fairmont State

NDC wins 12-3, loses 13-4 in MEC doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Playing in near-freezing conditions at Normandy Field, the Notre Dame College softball team battled the weather as well as the visiting Fairmont State Fighting Falcons on Sunday afternoon at Normandy Field. The Falcons won game one, 12-3, before losing game two of Sunday's Mountain East Conference doubleheader, 13-4.

GAME ONE
Notre Dame 12, Fairmont State 3

On the first pitch of the game, Fairmont State took an early 1-0 lead via solo home run. However, Mackenzie Wallace and the Falcons defense limited the damage, and went to work on offense in the bottom of the first.

Wallace hit a single to lead off the inning, helping her own cause and giving the Falcons offense an early spark. The senior stole second base, and a walk to Shelby Stephens put two runners on with just one out in the inning. Maria Vanadia belted a three-run home run to center field, scoring Wallace and Stephens as the Falcons took a 3-1 lead.

But the rally wasn't over yet. Kayla Sidorski smacked an RBI single to score Erin Calhoun, and the Falcons ended the first inning with a 4-1 lead over FSU.

After Wallace pitched a 1-2-3 top of the second, the Falcons added more runs as a RBI double from Stephens scored Sarah Depp to push NDC's lead to 5-1 after two.

Fairmont State scored one run in the top of the third to cut the Falcons' lead to 5-2 before NDC exploded for more offense in the fourth inning.

The Falcons scored seven runs in the fourth inning alone, blowing the game wide open as they took a controlling 12-2 lead over FSU. Nicole Spuhler hit a RBI single, Stephens and Calhoun each earned bases-loaded walks, and a grand slam from Anna Myers capped off the seven-run rally for NDC.

Needing just three outs to secure the mercy win over FSU, Wallace and the Falcons closed out the game in the fifth inning, holding on for a 12-3 mercy win over Fairmont State.

Wallace finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored while also pitching five innings of three-run ball, allowing just five hits while striking out six. Vanadia finished the game 1-for-3 with one run scored and three RBI while Myers went 1-for-3 with one run scored and four RBI for NDC.

GAME TWO
Fairmont State 13, Notre Dame 4

The second game of Sunday's MEC doubleheader proved to be a flip of the script as the Fighting Falcons led for the entirety of the game. FSU scored one run in the second and one more in the third to take a 2-0 lead over NDC, but the Falcons had some offense of their own.

In the bottom of the third, Kayla Sidorski earned a walk with the bases loaded, scoring Maria Vanadia to cut the deficit to 2-1 through three innings.

However, the visiting Fighting Falcons scored eight runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-1 lead over NDC. FSU scored three more runs in the fifth to make the score 13-1.

The Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was too-little, too-late as NDC fell by a final score of 13-4 in game two.

With the Sunday split, the Falcons now hold a 10-23 overall record this season, including a 4-12 mark in MEC play.

NDC will return to action on Tuesday, April 5 on the road at Urbana University in another MEC doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 3 pm and 5 pm.
