SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Playing their final home games of the 2016 season, the Falcons split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with the visiting Urbana Blue Knights on Tuesday afternoon at Normandy Field. The Falcons dropped game one, 2-1, before winning game two by a 4-2 final score.
GAME ONE
Urbana 2, Notre Dame 1
Game one of Tuesday's doubleheader featured a pitchers duel between Urbana's Cortney Moore and NDC's
Ashley Pokraka. The first inning was scoreless for both sides, and Pokraka held the Blue Knights scoreless in the top of the second as well. In the bottom of the second, the Falcons' offense put a number on the scoreboard.
Perris Stevens hit a one-out single in the top of the second to get things going for the Falcons.
Maria Vanadia followed with a walk, putting two runners on base with just one out in the inning.
Kayla Sidorski came to bat next and ripped a single to left-center, scoring Stevens and giving the Falcons the early 1-0 lead.
However, scoring would come to a halt over the next few innings as Moore and Pokraka continued to match scoreless innings.Â
In the top of the sixth, Urbana used a pair of consecutive singles to spark a two-run inning, keyed by a two-run double from Urbana's Margo Jackson. The double put the Falcons behind by one, 2-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth.
The Falcons attempted a late rally to tie the game, but fell short in doing so as NDC lost to Urbana, 2-1.
GAME TWO
Notre Dame 4, Urbana 2
After a narrow loss in game one, the Falcons came out swinging in game two.Â
In the bottom of the first,
Nicole Spuhler reached base via error, and
Shelby Stephens launched a two-run home run to deep center field to score both runners, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead.Â
Erin Calhoun and
Mackenzie Wallace kept the NDC rally alive with back-to-back singles, putting two more runners on base for the Falcons.
Maria Vanadia followed up with a single to right-center, scoring Calhoun and giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Urbana scored one run in the top of the second and one more in the third, but
Ashley Pokraka and the Falcons never surrendered the lead, 3-2.Â
Spuhler ripped a double to center field to start the bottom of the third, and a productive flyout from Stephens advanced Spuhler to third with just one out. Calhoun chipped in with a RBI single to score Spuhler, giving the Falcons a 4-2 advantage through three innings.
Both teams would have their fair share of hits throughout the remainder of the game, but the score held still at 4-2 as the Falcons held on for the victory.Â
Pokraka finished the game with six strikeouts in seven innings, allowing just two earned runs.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, April 23 on the road against West Liberty University in another MEC doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 2 pm and 4 pm.
