Falcons split with Virginia-Wise on Senior Day

NDC wins game one, 2-1, drops game two, 1-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Sunday afternoon at Normandy Field marked Senior Day for the Notre Dame College softball team as the Falcons played host to the visiting Virginia-Wise Cavaliers in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader.

The Falcons honored their five seniors - Nicole Spuhler, Kayla Sidorski, Mackenzie Wallace, Ashley Pokraka and Tayler Graver - prior to winning game one by a 2-1 score. In game two, the visiting Cavaliers escaped with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Falcons.

GAME ONE
Notre Dame 2, Virginia-Wise 1

After pitching both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Concord, Ashley Pokraka took the circle for the Falcons and continued to puzzle opposing batters. The senior pitcher held the Cavaliers scoreless through the first four innings, scattering four hits while striking out seven.

In the top of the fifth, however, the Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead over NDC with a solo home run from Erika McLaughlin. Pokraka limited the damage, allowing just one run in the inning as the Falcons trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth.

Tayler Graver led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to right field, sparking the Falcons offense. Nicole Spuhler hit a one-out single to left field, putting runners on first and second.

After two hits by Falcons seniors, freshman Shelby Stephens roped a double to left-center, scoring Sarah Depp from second base and tying the score at 1-1 through five innings.

In the top of the sixth, Pokraka continued to make quick work of the Cavaliers, striking out the first batter en route to another scoreless inning. In the bottom half of the inning, the Falcons' offense backed Pokraka with more offensive support.

Mackenzie Wallace reached base via error and advanced to second in the process, jumpstarting the NDC offense. Perris Stevens proved clutch as she ripped a double to right-center, scoring Wallace and giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead going into the seventh and final inning.

In the top of the seventh, Pokraka closed out the game for the Falcons, finishing with a complete game effort in which she allowed just one earned run as NDC won game one, 2-1.

Pokraka finished the game with 10 strikeouts in seven innings, scattering seven hits while allowing just one walk and one earned run for the Falcons.

GAME TWO
Virginia-Wise 1, Notre Dame 0

The low-scoring theme of game one carried over to game two, where both teams struggled to scratch runs across the plate. Both teams combined for six hits in the game, four from the Cavaliers and two from the Falcons.

Virginia-Wise used an RBI single from Alexa Hernandez in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead, and the score would remain the same for the remainder of the game.

The Falcons offense attempted a late rally in the seventh inning, but couldn't tie the game as NDC lost game two, 1-0.

With the doubleheader split, the Falcons now hold an overall record of 14-29, including a 9-19 mark in Mountain East Conference play.

The Falcons return to action on Tuesday, April 19 at home against Urbana University in another MEC doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 2:30 pm and 5 pm at Normandy Field.
