Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- On Friday, the Falcons defeated the fifth-ranked team in the country to advance to the Mountain East Conference Semifinals. On Saturday, NDC defeated the fourth-ranked team in the country to earn a berth in the MEC Finals. On Sunday, however, the sixth-seeded Falcons' miraculous Tournament run came to an end as NDC fell to the fourth-seeded Concord Mountain Lions, 70-64, at the Charleston Civic Center.
Senior guard
Tyree Gaiter finished the game with 23 points, eight assists and five rebounds in his final game in a Falcons uniform. Gaiter finishes his career with 2,421 points, the most in Notre Dame College men's basketball history. Gaiter also ends his career as the all-time assist and steal leader in Falcons basketball history.
Kyauta Taylor dropped 18 points, five rebounds and four assists while
Will Vorhees had 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Falcons.
The Falcons (21-11, 14-11 MEC) and Mountain Lions were tied 9-9 seven minutes into the game.
Ja'Sean Lewis then hit a 3-pointer, and Gaiter scored a lay-up and three of his own as the Falcons took a 17-9 lead with 11:25 remaining in the first half.
Three minutes later, the Falcons led 26-13 following a 3-pointer from Taylor with 8:30 remaining before halftime. However, the Mountain Lions fought back with a 10-run to cut the Falcons' lead to just three, 26-23.
But the Falcons managed to stay in front, taking a 33-29 lead over Concord going into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, Vorhees and Gaiter scored consecutive baskets to give the Falcons an eight-point lead, 37-29, with plenty of ballgame remaining. Concord stormed back with another run, evening the score at 44 with 13:21 remaining in regulation.
The Mountain Lions scored consecutive buckets to take a 48-44 lead over NDC, but Vorhees splashed a jumper to settle the Falcons. On NDC's next possession, Vorhees nailed another jumper with an assist from Taylor, and the Falcons trailed by just two, 50-48.
Concord spurred a 7-1 run to take a 57-49 lead with 9:04 remaining, but the Falcons continued to fight.
Taylor drained a shot from deep to cut the deficit to just five, and a pair of free throws from
Nathan Kellum made it just a one possession game, 57-54, with 5:48 left on the game clock.
An and-one play from Concord's Jemetrius Wade made it a six-point game again, but Vorhees nailed two more jumpers to bring NDC within two, 60-58. Concord split a pair of free throws on its next possession to make the score 61-58 with just 2:44 remaining in the game.
Gaiter, the all-time steals leader in NDC program history, added yet another steal to his tally and turned it into an easy transition lay-up, and the Falcons were down by just one, 61-60, with under two minutes in the game.
However, that's as close as the Falcons would come, falling short by a final score of 70-64 to Concord in the MEC Championship game.
With the loss, the Falcons end their season with an overall record of 21-11, including a 14-11 mark against MEC competition.
