Box Score 2 SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College softball team fell short in a Wednesday doubleheader at Normandy Field, losing both games to the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals in Mountain East Conference action. The Falcons fell short in game one by a 3-1 score before losing 7-3 in game two.
GAME ONE
Wheeling Jesuit 3, Notre Dame 1The visiting Cardinals scored two runs early in the first inning, but the Falcons limited the damage. The Falcons couldn't score in the bottom of the first, but
Ashley Pokraka stifled WJU in the top of the second, keeping NDC within two.
In the bottom of the second,
Kayla Sidorski led off with a walk to spark the Falcons' offense.
Sidorski advanced to second via
Anna Myers sacrifice bunt, and
Erin Calhoun smacked an RBI single to score Sidorski, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Both sides remained scoreless until the Cardinals added one run in the top of the seventh, putting the Falcons behind by a 3-1 deficit.
The score held steady from there as the Falcons fell by a final score of 3-1 in game one.
GAME TWO
Wheeling Jesuit 7, Notre Dame 3Repeating their first inning performance from game one, Wheeling Jesuit scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead over NDC.
The Falcons responded in the bottom half of the first, using a RBI single from
Maria Vanadia to score
Mackenzie Wallace, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Wallace pitched scoreless frames in the top of the second and third innings, keeping NDC within one run.
In the bottom of the third inning,
Shelby Stephens ripped a leadoff single and the Falcons were in business. A sacrifice bunt from Vanadia was followed by a single from
Kayla Sidorski, and the Falcons had runners on the corners with just one out in the third.
Continuing a strong freshman campagin,
Erin Calhoun doubled to left-center to score both runners while giving the Falcons a 3-2 lead over the Cardinals.
However, WJU scored runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a four-run lead over the Falcons, 7-3.
NDC attempted to claw back, but ultimately fell short by a 7-3 final. With the losses, the Falcons fall to 9-20 on the season, including a 3-9 mark in Mountain East Conference play.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday, April 2 at home against the Shepherd Rams in another MEC doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 1 pm and 3 pm at Normandy Field.
