Box Score 2 SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College softball team split a doubleheader on the road against the Mountain East Conference rival Glenville State Pioneers on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons fell short in game one, 6-3, before exploding for eight runs for an 8-2 victory in game two.
GAME ONE
Glenville State 6, Notre Dame 3After a scoreless first two innings, the Falcons jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning.
Sarah Depp reached base via error, and a sacrifice groundout from
Mackenzie Wallace moved Depp into scoring position for NDC.
With a runner on second and just one out,
Nicole Spuhler ripped an RBI single to score Depp and give the Falcons a 1-0 lead over Glenville. However, the Pioneers would respond with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the third as NDC fell behind 2-1.
In the top of the fourth, the Falcons responded with more offense.
Anna Myers was hit by pitch, earning a trip to first base to spark another Falcons rally.
Amy Hoover hit a single to put runners on the corners, and Depp hit an RBI single that scored Myers, tying the score at 2-2 in the fourth.
Glenville State scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking a 3-2 lead over the Falcons.Â
Once again, the Falcons fought back and tied the game. Depp collected another RBI in the top of the sixth with a single that scored
Anissa Kotoch, tying the score at 3-3 in the sixth.
However, the host Pioneers would use a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to down the Falcons by a final score of 6-3.
Depp finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored while Spuhler went 1-for-3 with an RBI for NDC.
GAME TWO
Notre Dame 8, Glenville State 2Mackenzie Wallace did it all for the Falcons in game two, pitching a complete game effort while also going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored, leading the Falcons to victory in game two.
After Wallace pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first,
Kayla Sidorski led off the second inning with a single to ignite the Falcons' offense.
Anna Myers earned a walk to put two runners on for the Falcons with just one out, and
Sarah Depp would later single to load the bases for NDC.
With two outs and the bases loaded early in the second inning, Wallace stepped to the plate and smacked an RBI single to score Myers from third, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead early.
NDC maintained its slim lead behind impressive pitching from Wallace, going into the fourth inning still leading 1-0. In the fourth inning, the Falcons blew the game open.
The Falcons tallied six hits in the fourth inning alone, and used a pair of Pioneers' errors to their advantage as NDC compiled four runs in the inning.
Nicole Spuhler (one RBI) and
Shelby Stephens (2 RBI) each had clutch hits in the inning as the Falcons jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
The Pioneers scored one run in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth, but Wallace and the Falcons' defense limited the damage in each inning to maintain a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the seventh, the Falcons added three more insurance runs as
Sarah Depp hit a two-run double, and Wallace followed with an RBI double of her own to push NDC's advantage to 8-2 going into the bottom of the seventh.
From there, Wallace closed out the game to finish her complete game effort, allowing just five hits and two earned runs across seven innings.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-18 on the season, including a 3-7 mark in Mountain East Conference play.
The Falcons will return to action on Wednesday, March 30 at home against Wheeling Jesuit University in another MEC doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 3 pm and 5 pm at Normandy Field.
