Box Score 2 SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Playing a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, the Notre Dame College softball team split a pair of games against the visiting Ashland Eagles at Normandy Field. The Falcons won game one, 3-1, but fell short in game two, 7-2.
GAME ONE
Notre Dame 3, Ashland 1In a low-scoring affair between both sides, NDC's
Ashley Pokraka put together a dominant outing for the Falcons. Pokraka tossed a complete game effort, allowing just one earned run while scattering five hits and striking out six.Â
After Pokraka breezed through the Eagles hitters in the top of the first, the Falcons came ready to hit in the bottom half of the inning.
Nicole Spuhler hit a one-out single to left field, and
Erin Calhoun bombed a two-run home run to put the Falcons on the board early, 2-0, after one inning.
Ashland responded with one run of their own in the top of the second, but that was all as Pokraka limited the damage and kept NDC in front, 2-1.
Scoring came to a halt for the remainder of the game, sans the fourth inning where NDC added one more run. Spuhler ripped a two-out RBI single to center field, scoring
Amy Hoover and giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead through four innings.
From there, Pokraka continued to stifle the Eagles' offense, retiring the last nine batters of the game to clinch the 3-1 victory for the Falcons.
GAME TWO
Ashland 7, Notre Dame 2Game two proved to be a different story as the Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first three innings. The Falcons' first run came via sacrifice fly from
Perris Stevens, scoring
Erin Calhoun in the bottom of the second.
The Falcons attempted to battle back throughout the game, but couldn't find an offensive spark.
NDC added one run in the fifth inning via sac fly from
Nicole Spuhler, scoring
Amy Hoover and cutting the deficit to 6-2 through five innings.
However, that's as close as the Falcons would come as they ultimately fell short by a final score of 7-2 in game two.
With the split doubleheader, the Falcons now own an 8-13 overall record.
NDC will return to action on Thursday, March 24 at home against Saginaw Valley State University in a non-conference doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 3 pm and 5 pm at Normandy Field.
