Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Notre Dame College softball team continued its 2016 Florida Trip on Monday, splitting a doubleheader against the University of Mary and Lewis University. NDC fell to Mary, 10-2, before defeating Lewis by a final score of 9-6.
GAME ONE
University of Mary 10, Notre Dame College 2The Falcons jumped on the scoreboard early, creating offense in the top of the first inning.
Nicole Spuhler reached base via error, and stole second to put herself in scoring position for NDC.
Spuhler then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and
Erin Calhoun drove a deep fly-out to center field, scoring Spuhler via sacrifice fly as the Falcons took an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
However, the Marauders responded with offense of their own, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second to take a 7-1 lead over NDC.
Later in the top of the fifth, NDC scored again as
Shelby Stephens ripped an RBI double down the right field line, scoring
Brittany Reising to cut the deficit to 8-2.
However, it wasn't enough as the Falcons fell short by a final score of 10-2 in game one of Monday's doubleheader.
GAME TWO
Notre Dame College 9, Lewis University 6The Falcons fell behind early as Lewis scored one run in the top of the first, but that was all as NDC limited the damage. Scoring would come to a halt until the bottom of the third inning, when the Falcons' offense began to heat up.
Halli Swiger led off the bottom of the third with a single to the right side, giving NDC offensive momentum. Consecutive outs put the NDC rally on hold before
Brittany Kirwin reached base via error, allowing Swiger to score as NDC tied the game at 1-1.
Shelby Stephens continued her recent hot streak with double to center field to score Kirwin, giving NDC a 2-1 lead. An RBI single to left field from
Perris Stevens pushed one more run across for the Falcons, who took a 3-1 lead after three innings of play.
After the Flyers tied the score 3-3 in the top of the fourth, NDC again bounced back with an offensive outpour. In the bottom of the fourth, Kirwin hit a sacrifice fly that scored
Nicole Luciano, putting NDC back on top, 4-3.
The Falcons broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to take a 9-3 lead over the Flyers. The five-run inning was keyed by a two-run triple from Stevens, scoring
Sarah Depp and
Myranda Rowland in the process.
From there, the Falcons held off a late rally from the Flyers to wrap up a 9-6 victory over Lewis.
NDC will return to action on Tuesday, March 1 with another pair of non-conference games. The Falcons will face Missouri-St. Louis at 9 AM on Tuesday mornining, and will follow with a showdown against Saint Anselm College at 11 AM.
