Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- Continuing their 2016 Florida road trip, the Falcons split a Sunday twinbill in non-conference action, beating Georgian Court University (3-0) and falling to Gannon University (4-2).
GAME ONE
Gannon 4, Notre Dame 2After two scoreless innings, the Falcons fell behind 3-0 to the Gannon following a three-run rally from the Golden Knights.
However, the Falcons responded with a rally of their own.
Mackenzie Wallace led off with a single through the left side of the infield, sparking the Falcons' offense. A sacrifice play by
Amy Hoover advanced Wallace into scoring position, and a single from
Shelby Stephens scored Wallace to cut the deficit to just 3-1.
Nicole Spuhler continued the rally with a single of her own, advancing Stephens to second. A two-out single from
Maria Vanadia pushed another run across for the Falcons, cutting the deficit to just 3-2 after three innings.
The Golden Knights added another run in the top of the fifth, and that's the last run that would cross in the game as the Falcons fell short by a final score of 4-2 to Gannon.
Stephens finished the game 2-for-4 with one RBI while Wallace went 1-for-3 with one run scored for NDC.
GAME TWO
Notre Dame 3, Georgian Court 0Alexis Burke pitched a complete game shutout to lead the Falcons to an impressive 3-0 victory over the Georgian Court Lions to wrap up Sunday's doubleheader. Burke was efficient from start to finish, throwing just 76 pitches across seven innings while allowing just four hits.
The Falcons offense supported Burke with a leadoff single from
Lydia Sanner in the top of the fifth inning, andÂ
Amy Hoover followed with a single through the left side.
Shelby Stephens advanced both runners via ground ball, putting two runners in scoring position for NDC.
Nicole Spuhler then reached base via infield single, loading the bases for
Erin Calhoun.Â
Calhoun proved clutch for the Falcons, ripping a single up the middle to score two runs, giving NDC a 2-0 lead through five innings.
In the top of the sixth, the Falcons continued their offensive momentum.
Tayler Graver hit a one-out triple down the right field line, and would come around to score via RBI single from
Amy Hoover.
The Falcons held on from there, defeating the Lions by a final score of 3-0.
NDC will return to action on Monday, Feb. 29 against University of Mary (1 p.m.) and Lewis University (3 p.m.) in another doubleheader.
