Falcons celebrate Senior Night with 74-62 win over WJU

NDC improves to 19-8 with win on senior night

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Thursday night in Murphy Gym marked Senior Night for the Notre Dame College women's basketball team and the Falcons cruised to a 74-6 victory over the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals. NDC honored its six seniors - Jessica Garcia, Alyssa Kraus, Lexi Hassing, Celine Mangan, Lauren Langenderfer, and Martha Nagbe - before Thursday night's contest, and sent their senior class out with a win in their final game at Murphy Gym.

Nagbe led the Falcons with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Langenderfer had 16 points and five rebounds while Kim Cook added 15 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes of action.

The Falcons (19-8, 16-5 Mountain East Conference) came out of the gate on fire, outscoring the Cardinals (23-4, 18-3 MEC) by an 18-6 margin in the first quarter alone.

NDC maintained its lead throughout the second quarter, and held a 32-21 advantage over WJU at the halftime intermission.

The Cardinals opened the third quarter with a basket to cut NDC's lead to nine, but the Falcons roared back with offense of their own. Langenderfer drained a 3-pointer, with an assist from Mangan, and Cook followed with a three of her own on NDC's next possession, giving the Falcons a 38-25 lead early in the third quarter.

Nagbe then scored a lay-up of her own, capping an 8-0 run by the Falcons that pushed NDC's lead to 15 points, 40-25, with 7:52 remaining in the third. A 7-0 run from WJU trimmed NDC's lead to just 10 points, 40-30, but once again the Falcons responded.

Midway through the third quarter, Kraus hit a jumper to spark a run for the Falcons. NDC finished the third quarter on a 13-7 run, capped off by a last-second 3-pointer from Mangan that gave the Falcons a 55-39 lead going into the fourth and final quarter.

From there, the Falcons continued to control the tempo, forcing defensive stops and securing rebounds in the process to cruise to a 74-62 win over the Cardinals.

With the win, the Falcons have now won six straight games and are now 19-8 overall, including a 16-5 mark in MEC play. Furthermore, the win secured a first-round bye for the Falcons in the upcoming Mountain East Conference Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, March 1.

The Falcons will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 27 in their final game of the 2015-16 regular season on the road against the Urbana Blue Knights. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
