PEPPER PIKE, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons fell behind early on in Saturday's contest against Ursuline, and were never able to catch up, as they fell to their cross-town rivals, 70-55.
For the Falcons (2-7) the loss came in their final non-conference tilt of the season, while for the Arrows (8-5) the win was their third straight at home.
Despite the loss, the Falcons did have a trio of double-digit scorers.
Kelsey Miller and
Kim Cook led the way with 11 points each, while
Seina Adachi added 10.
Though the first quarter belonged to the Arrows, the Falcons had the upper hand through the first few minutes of the contest. Notre Dame shot just 21.7-percent (5-for-23) from 3-point land on the afternoon, but they used a pair of big trifectas early on from Adachi to take an early 6-0 advantage.
However, the Arrows responded with an 8-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to take an 8-6 lead, and they never trailed the rest of the way.
Jessie Stout's layup off an assist from
Maggie King tied the game at 8-8 with 4:25 left in the first quarter, before the Arrows went on a 14-4 run over the final four minutes of the quarter to take a 22-12 lead.
The second quarter was a struggle for both sides offensively, and the Falcons were not able to get their first bucket of the quarter until
Ciara Reed hit a jumper off an assist from Cook at the 5:03-mark to bring NDC back within 12 (26-14). Reed and Miller combined to make three free throws over NDC's next two possessions to bring the lead down to single digits (25-16), but that was as close as the Falcons could get through the rest of the half, as the Arrows took a 37-25 lead into halftime.
Ursuline never allowed the Falcons to get back into the contest in the second half. They led by 20 (58-38) at the end of the third quarter, and they maintained a double digit lead throughout the second half to hang on for the win.
In addition to leading the Falcons with 11 points each, Miller and Cook each grabbed a team high, seven rebounds, while
Terrina Robinson and Adachi each grabbed five. King led the Falcons with three assists, and Cook added a pair of blocks.
The Falcons return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 3, when they play host to Glenville State in a Mountain East Conference tilt at Murphy Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
