Falcons fade late against No. 1 Ashland

Box Score
South Euclid, OH -- The Notre Dame College women's basketball team suffered a 92-55 defeat at the hands of the visiting No. 1 ranked Ashland University Eagles on Wednesday evening at Murphy Gymnasium.

Kelsey Miller led the way for the Falcons (3-6), scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds despite being limited to only 20 minutes due to foul trouble. Kim Cook also added 12 points and six rebounds.

It was clear from the opening tip that the visiting Eagles would look to push the tempo, as they came out in a full-court press. Their strategy initially worked, as the Eagles jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. However, Kim Cook was able to open the scoring for the Falcons by drilling her first 3-point attempt of the evening, making the score 4-3 at the 8:00 mark.

Ashland looked dangerous early, extending their lead to as many as seven points in the first quarter. However, big shots from Cook, Miller, and Jessie Stout kept the Falcons within striking distance, and the Falcons trailed by a narrow 20-15 margin after one quarter.

The Falcons opened the second quarter with a quick 5-1 run, trailing only 21-20 after a Kelsey Miller score in the post.

For the remainder of the quarter, the teams again traded baskets, with Ashland extending their lead to as many as 9 points with 1:00 remaining in the half. Erin Haislah cut into the lead by knocking down a pair of free throws to end the half, and the Falcons went into the locker room trailing the Eagles by a score of 36-29

Cook again opened the scoring just moments into second half, laying the ball in to cut Ashland's lead to 36-31, but this was as close as the Falcons would get for the remainder of the game.

The No. 1 ranked Eagles took control over the next several minutes, and went on a devastating 25-9 run over the remainder of the quarter, giving them a 61-40 lead at the end of three quarters.

The Falcons battled hard to cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter, but Ashland simply couldn't miss, shooting a blistering 64.7 percent from the field in the quarter.

The Falcons will have a few weeks off until they visit Ursuline College on Saturday, 12/31. The game is scheduled for tip-off at 2:00 PM.
