NDC overcomes tough start to beat Cheyney, 69-63

Box Score
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons scored their second victory of the season on Saturday evening, as they overcame a tough start, in a 69-63 victory over Cheyney.

Notre Dame (2-0) is 2-0 for the third year in a row, while the loss for Cheyney (0-2) leaves them winless in the West Liberty tournament.

The Falcons struggled early on, as they missed their first five shots of the game, putting them in an early seven point (9-2) hole at the 15:45 mark in the first half.

However, they were able to battle back over the next five minutes, and eventually took a 15-13 lead on a 3-pointer from Kyauta Taylor with 10:48 to play in the half.

On the ensuing offensive possession, Ja'Sean Lewis came up with a block, grabbed the rebound, and then finished it off with a 3-pointer on the other end of the floor to push the NDC lead to five (18-13).

The rest of the first half was tightly contested, with both sides making modest runs, but Notre Dame was able to take a 36-34 lead into the half, after Drew Scarberry buried a jumper with 17 seconds left in the opening stanza.

The second half was very tight, until Notre Dame created a little separation with just over three minutes left. The game was tied at 58-58 with just over three  minutes to go, before Kobie Johnson, Taylor and Will Vorhees all buried jumpers on consecutive offensive possessions to give NDC a 64-58 advantage with 1:25 to play.

Lewis, Johnson and Scarberry all hit free throws in the final minute of the game to ice the victory for the Falcons.

Lewis turned in a second straight double-double, with 15 points and 18 rebounds to go along with seven blocks. Vorhees led NDC with 24 points and added nine rebounds to go along with a pair of blocks, while Taylor added 18 points and five boards.

The Falcons return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 15, for their home opener, as they welcome Mercyhurst to Murphy Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
