ERIE, Pa. -- The Notre Dame College women's basketball team opened its 2016-17 campaign on the road against the California University of Pennsylvania Vulcans, hosted at Mercyhurst University, but dropped the season opener by a final score of 74-59.
The Falcons (0-1 overall) were led by
Kelsey Miller, who shot 9-of-14 from the floor while leading NDC with 21 points. The senior forward also reeled in eight rebounds for the Falcons.
NDC also outscored Cal-Pa. in bench points, 26-14, led by 12 points from
Jessie Stout and nine points from
Marisa Finazzo, who both made their collegiate debuts on Friday night.
The score between both sides remained close after the first quarter, with NDC trailing 14-12. However, the Falcons found themselves trailing 34-26 at halftime as the Vulcans won the second quarter, 20-14.
But the Falcons refused to simply roll over. A 13-7 run to start the third quarter was capped by a lay-up from
Terrina Robinson and a 3-pointer from Stout, cutting the deficit to 41-39 with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter.
However, the Vulcans responded with a run of their own, and extended their lead to 10 points, 51-41, going into the fourth and final quarter.
NDC battled in the fourth quarter but came up short, falling to the Vulcan by a final score of 74-59. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 0-1 on the season.
NDC returns to action Saturday, Nov. 12 on the road against the host Mercyhurst Lakers in another non-conference matchup. Game time on Saturday is scheduled for 5 pm in Erie, Pa.
