Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons continued their winning ways in another Mountain East Conference contest on Wednesday evening, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan on the road, 87-71.
For the Falcons (9-3, 3-3 MEC) the win was their fourth in a row, giving them six in their last seven games, while for the Bobcats (9-3, 4-2 MEC) the loss snapped a five-game winning streak, and was their first since Nov. 30.
Notre Dame was able to erase an early deficit, and they shot the lights out, hitting 57.4-percent (35-for-61) of their shots from the floor, including a 47.6-percent (10-for-21) clip from beyond the arc. They put on a display in the second half, where they pulled away, blistering the nets by making 65.4-percent (17-for-26) of their shots in the second stanza.
Over the first few minutes of the game, the Bobcats seized control on their home floor. WVWC hit on 80.0-percent (4) of their first five shots from the floor, and took an 11-5 advantage over the Falcons just three and a half minutes into the contest.
WVWC eventually took an eight point (19-11) lead at the 12:55-mark, before Notre Dame charged back into the contest, and did so very quickly. It took the Falcons less than 80 seconds to tie the game, as they used a pair of 3-pointers from
Will Vorhees and a layup from
Kyauta Taylor on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 19-19 with 11:37 left in the half.
The rest of the half saw both sides exchange modest runs. The Bobcats held a five point (36-31) lead with 5:17 remaining in the half, when the Falcons caught fire once again, as they closed out the first half on a 10-1 run, taking a 41-37 lead into the locker room at the half. During that 10-1 run, the Falcons passed the ball very well, with assists on all five buckets, four of those coming from
Tyree Gaiter.
Gaiter and Vorhees combined to score NDC's first nine points of the second half, and it was a 3-pointer from Gaiter that gave the Falcons a nine point (50-41) advantage just over two minutes into the second stanza. That was a sign of things to come in a half where the Falcons dominated the Bobcats and pulled away.
After Tanner McGrew made a pair of free throws with 15:12-remaining, the Bobcats closed the gap to five (52-47), but the Falcons hit their stride once again, responding with an incredible 11-0 run over the next five minutes, taking a 63-47 advantage after Gaiter completed an old fashioned 3-point play.
Notre Dame kept the pressure on the Bobcats defensively, and never took their foot off the pedal over the final 10 minutes of the contest, maintaining a double digit lead for the rest of the game, as they finished off a big road upset.
Five Falcons scored in double figures. Vorhees led the way with 24 points on the night to go along with nine rebounds, while Gaiter turned in a double-double with 18 points to go along with 11 assists. Taylor and
Najeeb Johnson added 11 points each, and
Ja'Sean Lewis came a rebound away from a double-double, with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Falcons are in action again on Sunday, Jan. 10, when they play host to Concord at Murphy Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
