Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On a day where he was honored prior to the contest,
Tyree Gaiter scored 29 points, including 10 in overtime, to lead the Falcons in a come from behind effort, as they erased a late deficit in regulation, and outlasted Glenville State in overtime, 102-92.
The Falcons (14-6, 8-6 MEC) have now won four of their last five games overall, and four straight at home, while the loss for the Pioneers (7-13, 4-9 MEC) was their seventh in their last eight games overall.
In front of a sold out crowd, Gaiter was honored before the game, as the Falcons celebrated
Tyree Gaiter day. That rowdy crowd was very vocal throughout the night, as they chanted "M-V-P, M-V-P" while Gaiter hit a few big free throws to close out the victory for the Falcons in overtime.
Gaiter was one of three Falcons to score 20 or more, and he was one of four to score in double figures. His 29 points were a game high, while
Will Vorhees turned in a double-double, with 29 points, and 15 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end.
Kyauta Taylor scored 26 points on the strength of a 6-for-12 (50.0-percent) shooting performance from 3-point land, and
Ja'Sean Lewis scored 13 points to go along with seven boards and four assists.
The first half was tightly contested, with neither side able to take a decisive advantage. Notre Dame led for most of the opening stanza, but never led by any more than five. NDC held a decisive, 22-15 advantage on the glass, and extended a number of offensive possessions with eight offensive rebounds.
The second half was a bit of a different story. While the Falcons held a slight (53-52) advantage after Vorhees hit a free throw with 12:45 to play, the Pioneers responded, by scoring the game's next seven points, to take a 59-53 lead with 11:52 left.
From that point forward, the Pioneers never trailed again in regulation, and Notre Dame was not able to tie the game until Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 36 seconds to play, which was the shot that forced overtime.
Glenville State led by as many as nine (77-68) with 5:08 to play, but they went the final 3 minutes and 21 seconds of regulation without making a shot from the floor. During that drought, Notre Dame would get two big trifectas, from Gaiter and Lewis, and they forced overtime, where they took over.
Gaiter was a perfect, 8-for-8 at the free throw line in overtime, and hit four big ones inside the final minute, which played a major role in the victory. The senior from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, scored NDC's first four points of the overtime period, and NDC never trailed the Pioneers again.
The Pioneers shot just 28.6-percent (2-for-7) in the extra period, while Notre Dame 62.5-percent (5-for-8) from the floor during that stretch, getting 10 of their 19 overtime points from Gaiter to come away with the come from behind victory.
The Falcons are in action again on Thursday, Feb. 4, when they hit the road for another MEC matchup against the Charleston Golden Eagles. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
