Women's basketball beats Urbana, 84-74, for eighth straight win

50-point first half leads Falcons to victory

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College women's basketball team extended its win streak to eight straight games with a Thursday night home win over the visiting Urbana Blue Knights, 84-74. The Falcons used a 50-point first-half performance to take control and pick up yet another Mountain East Conference win.

NDC had four different players score double-digits, led by 19 points from Martha Nagbe. Lauren Langenderfer scored 16 points, Alyssa Kraus scored 14 and Hope Thorbahn added 12 more points to help lead the Falcons to victory.

The Falcons (11-6 overall, 8-3 MEC) came out of the gate firing, and jumped out to a 27-20 advantage after the first quarter of play.

NDC opened the second quarter of play on an 8-2 run, capped by a jumper from Nagbe that gave the Falcons a 35-22 lead with 7:17 remaining in the second quarter. Just over two minutes later, Lauren Langenderfer drained a pair of free throws to push the lead to 16 points, 43-27.

At halftime, the Falcons still led by 16 points over the visiting Blue Knights, 50-34.

However, the Blue Knights came out with a strong third quarter, trimming the Falcons' lead to just five, 64-59, going into the fourth and final quarter.

But the Falcons remained confident and poised.

Nagbe forced a steal and turned it into easy transition points, giving the Falcons a seven-point lead early in the fourth. Nagbe's defense-to-offense play spurred a 10-4 Falcons run to open the quarter, taking a 74-63 lead with 4:49 remaining in the game.

From there, the Falcons used clutch defense and free throws to ice the game, holding on for a 84-74 win over Urbana at home.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-6 overall, including an 8-3 mark in MEC play.

NDC will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23 on the road against the West Liberty Hilltoppers in another MEC showdown. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
