Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons and Concord Mountain Lions shot the lights out at Murphy Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon, but Concord was able to hold off a late NDC rally, and came away with a 99-97 victory.
The loss for the Falcons (9-4, 3-4 MEC) snapped a season best, four-game winning streak, while the victory for the Mountain Lions (9-4, 4-3 MEC) snapped a brief, three-game slide.
Both teams shot the ball extremely well. Concord hit on 53.0-percent (35-for-66) of their shots, including a 42.1-percent (16-for-38) clip from 3-point land. Notre Dame actually shot better than the Mountain Lions, netting 54.4-percent (37-for-68) of their shots from the floor, and drilled 44.4-percent (12) of their 27 shots from beyond the arc.
Points weren't tough to come by early in the contest, as the two teams exchanged in a back-and-forth battle in the opening stanza. The two teams shot extremely well, and Notre Dame took a slight edge (21-18) after
Will Vorhees hit a layup about five and a half minutes into the game.
Following the Vorhees layup, Concord caught fire, and went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes, and took a 26-21 advantage. Over the next five minutes, neither side was able to take a decisive advantage.
Tyree Gaiter hit a 3-pointer with 7:49 left in the half to bring NDC within one (34-33), but Concord again responded in a big way.
Over the next three and a half minutes, Concord built a double-digit lead. They scored 15 of the game's next 19 points during that stretch, giving them a 49-37 lead, with 3:36 left in the half.
Notre Dame was able to bring the deficit back down to single digits, and eventually came back within five (51-46) after Vorhees hit a jumper inside the final minute, but Aaron Miller, who hit seven 3-pointers on the night, hit one at the end of the first half, to give Concord a 54-46 lead at the half.
Concord was able to maintain a lead through the duration of the second half, but Notre Dame came within one on a few separate occasions. While the Falcons continued to dive into the deficit, every time it seemed like NDC had the momentum, the Mountain Lions found an answer.
Notre Dame first trimmed the deficit down to one (65-64) at the 11:47-mark after
Ja'Sean Lewis buried a 3-pointer. The following three minutes saw the Concord lead grow to five, but no more, and Gaiter hit a pair of free throws with 8:35 left to bring NDC back within one (75-74).
Another big Mountain Lion run over the next three minutes gave them another double-digit lead. They used a 12-3 run during that stretch to take an 87-77 lead with 5:14 to play.
Gaiter would not let the Falcons go down quietly. He was responsible for Notre Dame's last 11 points, and he buried three buckets inside the final 70 seconds of the game. Gaiter's jumper with 31 seconds left brought the Falcons back within a point (98-97), but that was NDC's final basket of the game.
The Mountain Lions forced a pair of big NDC turnovers in the last 15 seconds of the game, as they held on for the victory.
Gaiter scored 23 of his game high, 31 points in the second half. He also added six assists. Vorhees finished the day with 29 points and three steals, and eight rebounds. Lewis had a season high, 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, while
Kyauta Taylor scored 10 points, and had six steals.
The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, Jan. 12, when they play host to Virginia-Wise at Murphy Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
