Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W.Va -- The Notre Dame College softball team finished the 2015 regular season with a road trip on Sunday afternoon against the top team in the Mountain East Conference standings, the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats. The Falcons fought hard in both games, but ultimately lost by respective scores of 6-3 in game one and 4-3 in game two.
GAME ONEWest Virginia Wesleyan 6, Notre Dame 3The Falcons started the game off with a bang as
Kayla Sidorski launched a solo home run, her third of the season, as NDC took an early 1-0 lead. However, the Bobcats responded with a three-run rally in the bottom of the first, making the score 3-1 after one inning.
After a scoreless second inning,
Sarah Depp hit a one-out double in the top of the third to spark the Falcons.
Kelsey Coleman then ripped an RBI single that scored Depp and cut the deficit to just 3-2.
The Bobcats scored one more run in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-2 over NDC.
Trailing by four in the top of the seventh, the Falcons attempted to come back against the top team in the MEC standings.
Nicole Spuhler was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and eventually came around to score via RBI single from Depp.
However, that's as close as the Falcons would come as they dropped game one to the Bobcats, 6-3.
GAME TWOWest Virginia Wesleyan 4, Notre Dame 3Game two was a showdown between two talented teams, as the Falcons and Bobcats battled in a close pitchers duel between NDC's
Ashley Hall and WVW's Kaity Hanna.
Matching her performance from game one,
Kayla Sidorski launched another first inning home run to spark the Falcons early, making the score 1-0. Meanwhile, Hall mowed through the Bobcats lineup in the first two innings, allowing just one hit and zero runs while maintaining the Falcons' 1-0 lead.
However, the Bobcats used a pair of solo home runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead going into the fifth inning.
Continuing the back-and-forth battle, the Falcons offense rallied in the top of the fifth.
Maria Vanadia hit a single with one out in the inning to put a runner on base for the Falcons. After another Falcons out,
Kelsey Coleman came to the plate with two outs and the Falcons trailing by one. Continuing her dominant 2015 season, Coleman jacked a two-run home run that scored Vanadia and herself, taking back the lead and giving the Falcons a 3-2 mark over the Bobcats.
Hall worked through the Bobcats lineup again in the bottom of the fifth, preserving NDC's 3-2 lead going into the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats tied the game at three with a solo home run, and the score was knotted 3-3 going into the seventh inning.
NDC couldn't plate a run in the top of the seventh, leading to the bottom half of the inning. Hall retired the first batter of the inning before consecutive hits put two runners on with just one out. With runners on second and third and the score tied at three, Hall forced a lineout to
Nicole Spuhler at second base, good for the second out of the inning.
However, the Bobcats hit a single with two outs in the seventh to score the runner from third, and the Falcons dropped a heartbreaker to the top team in the conference, losing 4-3.
