Box Score 2 GLENVILLE, W.Va -- The Notre Dame College softball team opened its weekend road trip with a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Glenville State on Saturday afternoon at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. Playing in wet and cold conditions, the Falcons swept the Pioneers in the doubleheader, winning 12-6 and 17-0, respectively.
GAME ONENotre Dame 12, Glenville State 6The Falcons put together one of their most impressive offensive showings of the season in game one, scoring at least one run in every inning en route to a 12-6 win over Glenville State.Â
Both teams scored one run in the first before
Nicole Spuhler hit a solo home run in the top of the second, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead. However, the Pioneers used a pair of home runs to tally three runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 4-2 lead through two innings.Â
NDC scored one more run in the top of the third due to a defensive miscue by the Pioneers, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Still trailing by just one in the top of the fourth, the Falcons started a two-out rally with a single from
Sarah Depp.
A wild pitch advanced Depp to second, but it didn't much matter what base Depp was on as
Kelsey Coleman launched a two-out, two-run home run to give NDC a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning.
The Pioneers tied the game, 5-5, in the bottom of the fourth, but the Falcons offense again fought back in the fifth.
Kayla Sidorski led off the fifth inning for the Falcons with a single, and was followed by a pair of singles from
Anissa Kotoch and
Amy Hoover. With no outs and the bases loaded, Spuhler stepped to the plate having hit one home run in the game already.
With the score tied 5-5, Spuhler hit a grand slam to clear the bases and break the game open as the Falcons took a 9-5 lead over the Pioneers.
Rachelle Miller stifled Glenville State in the bottom of the fifth, retiring the Pioneers in order. NDC scored one insurance run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh, leading to an eventual 12-6 win over the Pioneers.
GAME ONENotre Dame 17, Glenville State 0The second game of Saturday's doubleheader was an even more impressive offensive showing by the Falcons, and it began with a bang from
Kelsey Coleman.
Coleman led off the game with a solo home run, setting the tempo and keeping momentum from game one with the Falcons.
Amy Hoover also had an RBI single that scored
Mackenzie Wallace in the inning, and the Falcons led 2-0 after one.
The second inning was an offensive onslaught for NDC as 11 different Falcons came to bat in the inning. An RBI double from
Kayla Sidorski plated the first run of the inning, and an RBI single from
Anissa Kotoch kept the rally alive. Hoover also hit an RBI single, and
Tayler Graver roped a two-run double to key a seven-run inning for the Falcons, who led 9-0 after just two innings.
In the top of the third, Coleman led off with a walk and the Falcons were back at it again on offense. After consecutive outs, Kotoch reached base via error, allowing Coleman to score and pushing the lead to 10-0. After racking up five RBI in game one, Spuhler scored yet another run with an RBI single that scored Kotoch.
NDC scored three total runs in the third inning, and led 12-0 going into the bottom of the third.
Matching NDC's dominant offensive performance,
Ashley Hall was equally impressive pitching for the Falcons.
Hall pitched all five innings for the Falcons, allowing just one hit while striking out five to shut down the Pioneers offense. When all was said and done, Hall and the Falcons defeated GSC in game two, 17-0.
The Falcons return to action on Sunday afternoon on the road at West Virginia Wesleyan in another Mountain East Conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
