Box Score 2 SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Thursday afternoon at Normandy Field marked a historic day in the Notre Dame College softball program. Ashley Pokraka threw a complete game, one-hitter in game one before Ashley Hall pitched a perfect game in game two as the Falcons swept the Senators, 1-0 and 7-0, respectively.
On the day, Pokraka and Hall combined allowed just one hit in 14 innings pitched while striking out 11 batters each. Furthermore, Hall's perfect game marks the first such performance in program history.
GAME ONENotre Dame 1, Davis & Elkins 0Playing in murky conditions, the Falcons and Senators squared off in what became a pitchers duel, as offense was not easily found for either side.
Ashley Pokraka took the circle for the Falcons, and immediately went to work in the first with a scoreless inning. The Falcons led off the bottom half of the first with consecutive outs, but then three straight hits from
Kayla Sidorski,
Anna Myers and
Nicole Spuhler loaded the bases with two outs. However, the Falcons failed to capitalize, leaving the game scoreless through one.
Pokraka went 1-2-3 in the second inning, and the third inning, and also in the fourth inning as well. Going into the bottom of the fourth, the game still remained scoreless as the Falcons came to bat. NDC started the inning with consecutive outs, but a two-out single from
Amy Hoover kept the inning alive.
Kelsey Coleman then singled to put two runners on, but again the Falcons couldn't capitalize and score.
In the top of the fifth, Pokraka stayed in the zone with another 1-2-3 inning, and also retired the side in the top of the sixth as well. However, the game still remained scoreless as the Falcons failed to score in the bottom of the inning, leading to a scoreless tie going into the seventh.
With a no-hitter going through six innings, Pokraka allowed her first hit of the day to the first batter of the seventh as a bloop single went over third base. Pokraka then issued a walk to put two Senators on base with no outs in the seventh, but the senior buckled down and responded.Â
In dire need of outs, Pokraka took matters into her own hands with a strikeout followed by a fly-out to first base. With two outs and two D&E runners on base in a scoreless game, Pokraka escaped the jam with a strikeout - her 11th of the game - leading to the bottom of the seventh.
Mackenzie Wallace reached base on a throwing error from third base, bringing
Kayla Sidorski to the plate. Sidorski ripped a single up the middle to advance Wallace, who also took third on the play due to an error in center field.
With the winning run just 60 feet away at third base,
Anna Myers hit a walk-off single to clinch the 1-0 win over the Senators.
Pokraka finished the game with a complete game effort, allowing just one hit while striking out 11 batters to earn the win.
GAME TWONotre Dame 7, Davis & Elkins 0Game two started with a different theme as offense came early for the Falcons. Batting third,
Kayla Sidorski hit an RBI single to score
Mackenzie Wallace and
Anna Myers stayed hot with an RBI double as the Falcons took a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Little did the Falcons know at the time, that would be more than enough offense with Hall pitching.
Pitching for the Falcons was
Ashley Hall, who worked a 1-2-3 first inning and duplicated that performance in the top of the second to keep NDC in front, 2-0.
In the bottom half of the second,
Kelsey Coleman roped a two-run double to the left-center gap, scoring
Maria Vanadia and
Tayler Graver as the Falcons pushed their lead to 4-0.Â
After a scoreless third inning in which Hall continued to look dominant, the Falcons brewed up more offense in the fourth. Sidorski grounded out to shortstop in the inning, but it was a productive out as Coleman was able to score from third to make the score 5-0.
Nicole Paolucci hit an RBI single to center field that scored
Mackenzie Wallace, and the Falcons led 6-0 through four innings.
Hall worked a scoreless fifth inning via two fly-outs and one strikeout, again making light work of the Senators offense. The Falcons then tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 7-0 going into the sixth.
In the top of the sixth, Hall struck out consecutive batters before a fly-out ended the inning. Just like that, the Hall and the Falcons were just three outs away from a win, but more importantly, they were just three outs away from making history.
After NDC went scoreless in the top of the seventh, Hall came out in the bottom of the inning ready to shut the door on the Senators. Hall struck out the first batter of the inning before forcing a fly-out to shortstop.
One out away from making history, Hall cemented herself in NDC softball lore with yet another strikeout, clinching the win for the Falcons and the perfect game for herself.
Hall finished the game with a perfect game, zero hits and zero walks, while striking out 11, leading the Falcons to the 7-0 win over Davis & Elkins.
The Falcons will next compete on Friday, April 3 at home against Fairmont State in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
