GAME ONECharleston 5, Notre Dame 0The first game of the doubleheader started as a pitchers duel between Charleston's Courtney Fain and NDC's
Ashley Hall.Â
Hall retired the Golden Eagles in order in the first inning, going 1-2-3 to get off to a strong start. The senior also held Charleston scoreless in the second and third innings, leading to a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third.
Maria Vanadia worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the third and
Amy Hoover doubled to right field to put two Falcons in scoring position. Using her reputation to her advantage,
Kelsey Coleman walked after not being given anything to swing at, loading the bases with just one out. However, the Falcons failed to capitalize on the opportunity, leading to a 0-0 score going into the fourth.
In the top of the fourth, Charleston's Cortney Norris hit a solo home run to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. Charleston also added two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead, but the Falcons offense struggled to respond.
Charleston added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, and the Falcons eventually fell short by a final score of 5-0 in game one.
GAME TWO
Notre Dame 2, Charleston 1After being held scoreless in game one, the Falcons created early offense in game two.
Kelsey Coleman led off the bottom of the first with a single and
Mackenzie Wallace followed with a single of her own to put two runners on for NDC. With one out, Coleman and Wallace were on second and third after a productive out from
Kayla Sidorski advanced the runners.
Anissa Kotoch hit into a fielders choice that allowed Coleman to score from third, and the Falcons led 1-0 after the first inning.
Ashley Pokraka remained steady on the bump for the Falcons, retiring the Golden Eagles with ease through the first three innings. Charleston scored one run in the top of the fourth inning via RBI double, but that was all as Pokraka forced a fly-out to end the inning.
With the score tied 1-1, both sides pressed for the game-winning run during the late innings of the game, but neither side could score. After seven innings, the score remained 1-1, forcing extra innings at Normandy Field.
A scoreless eighth inning led to the top of the ninth, where Charleston's Rachelle Toppings led off with a single off Pokraka. However, the senior immediately thwarted any scoring opportunities for the Golden Eagles, retiring the next three batters in order.
After consecutive outs to start the bottom of the ninth,
Kayla Sidorski singled to right field to keep the inning alive.
With the score still tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, Kotoch came to the plate and
launched a double over the left fielders head, allowing Sidorski to score all the way from first and giving the Falcons the 2-1 win in the process.
