Florida Finale

Falcons fall twice in Florida finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Notre Dame Falcons saw a late rally fall short in their first game on Saturday afternoon, as they dropped a pair of games in their final day of play at the Dot Richardson Games.

Notre Dame (3-9) fell, 3-2 in the first contest of the day to Indianapolis (6-4) in a game where they scored both of their runs in the seventh inning, before they fell in the final game of their trip, 7-1, to Slippery Rock (1-1).

In their first contest, the Falcons fell behind, 3-0, to Indy, before mounting a comeback in the seventh inning. Indy's Casey Williamson smashed a two-run homer to center in the bottom of the third inning, and they added another run Taylor Russell's run scoring single in the fifth.

Down to their final set of outs, the Falcons really made things interesting in the top of the seventh. Two quick outs were recorded before the NDC rally began. Nicole Spuhler kept the game alive with a two-out single to right field, and she scored moments later, when Kelsey Coleman smashed a two-run homer to center, her fourth bomb of the trip, to bring the Falcons within one.

Mackenzie Wallace followed with a base hit to put the tying run aboard, but the Greyhounds were able to end the rally moments later to secure the win.

Ashley Hall (1-3) pitched well in the loss, allowing a trio of runs on seven hits while fanning seven batter in the process, and Wallace led the way with two hits for the Falcons.

In their second game on the day, Notre Dame was only able to come up with a pair of hits, as they dropped a 7-1 decision to Slippery Rock .

The Falcons were limited to just a pair of hits, getting both knocks from Brittany Kirwin, who went 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Down 1-0, heading into the bottom of the third, Notre Dame used a little two-out thunder again to get a run on the board. Wallace was able to draw a two-out free pass, before Kirwin drove in NDC's only run of the game, scoring Wallace from first on a double to center.

However, Slippery Rock snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring five times on five hits in the top of the sixth inning to pull away.

During the trip, Coleman led the way for Notre Dame, hitting .444, with 16 hits, seven for extra bases including four homeruns, and she drove in 10 along the way.

All three Falcon hurlers, Hall, Wallace and Ashley Pokraka all came away with at least one victory, and Hall added a pair of saves as well, to go along with 20 strikeouts.

The Falcons are in action again on Friday, March 13, when they square off against Edinboro (Pa.) in Salem, Va.  The first pitch is scheduled for a 7 p.m. delivery.
