Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Falcons softball team followed the weather pattern on Thursday, heating up with a pair of victories of Post University and Felician College to push NDC's win streak to three games.
Game One
Notre Dame College 3, Post University 2Playing the seventh game thus far of their 2015 Spring trip, the Falcons faced the Post University Eagles (CT) on Thursday afternoon. NDC used a three-run fourth inning to pave the way to a 3-2 victory over the Eagles in their first game of the day.
Action was quiet between both sides until the bottom of the second, when the Eagles hit a leadoff double against NDC's
Ashley Pokraka.
Pokraka regrouped and struck out the next hitter, but a single from the Eagles' Nicole Venturini put runners on first and third with one out. However, Pokraka and the Falcons defense stood strong, enducing a double play to escape the early jam.
The Falcons then took advantage of their opportunities in the top of the third inning.
After
Mackenzie Wallace hit a one-out single,
Kelsey Coleman came to the plate and jacked a two-run home run to give NDC a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning with two outs,
Brittany Kirwin earned a four-pitch walk to keep the rally going.
Kayla Sidorski smacked a double down the left field line, to put runners on second and third.
Nataly Ciocca followed up with a single to score Kirwin, giving NDC a 3-0 lead through three innings.
In the bottom of the third, Pokraka zoned in and mowed through the Eagles lineup to keep momentum on NDC's side.
The Eagles used a home run to key a two-run fourth inning, but Pokraka and the Falcons limited the damage and kept the narrow 3-2 lead.
The score remained 3-2 going into the top of the sixth, where Wallace and Coleman hit back-to-back singles to start a two-run rally. NDC was unable to score in the inning, however, leading to the bottom of the sixth.
Pitching in relief,
Ashley Hall allowed a leadoff walk but then retired three straight Eagles to end the sixth.
In the seventh inning, it was more of the same from Hall, who went 1-2-3 to earn the save and clinch the 3-2 win for NDC.
Game Two
Notre Dame College 9, Felician College 6After an impressive offensive showing in game one,
Mackenzie Wallace took the circle in game two for NDC against the Felician Golden Falcons.
Felician's Ciera Clark hit a two-run home run early in the first inning, but Wallace worked through it escaped the inning.
Trailing by just two, the Falcons offense responded in the bottom of the first.
Kelsey Coleman hit a leadoff single and
Sarah Depp gracefully hit a bunt single to start a Falcons rally.
Kayla Sidorski, who was second on the team with four home runs in 2014, hit a three-run shot to give NDC a 3-2 lead over Felician after one inning.
Wallace found her groove in the second inning and made quick work of the Golden Falcons, leading to another opportunity for NDC's offense.
Tayler Graver added to the Falcons' lead with a one-out home run to right field, making the score 4-2. Coleman worked a two-out walk later in the inning, and Depp came up clutch with a triple to score Coleman, pushing the advantage to 5-2 through two innings.
The Eagles responded with one run in the fourth inning, and scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at five, but again the Falcons offense would not be denied.
In the bottom of the fifth, Depp reached base via an Eagles error and
Brittany Kirwin singled to left field to spark NDC. Sidorski continued a hot day at the plate with an RBI single, scoring Depp, advancing Kirwin to third and giving the Falcons a 6-5 lead. Nataly Ciocca kept the rally going with a single to score Kirwin, making the score 7-5.
But the Falcons weren't done there.
Maria Vanadia joined in on the action with a two-run single, pushing the Falcons lead to four, 9-5, through five innings.
After allowing two runs in the fifth, Hall closed out the sixth and seventh innings again for NDC, leading to a 9-6 win over Felician.
With the win, the Falcons have now won three straight games on their Spring trip in Clermont, Florida.
NDC will return to action on Friday, March 6 with a pair of games against Merrimack College and the University of Indianapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
