Falcons split games against Findlay, Lake Erie in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game One
University of Findlay 3, Notre Dame College 2

NDC continued its Spring Break trip in Clermont, Florida on Wednesday afternoon against the University of Findlay Oilers in the first of two games on the day. The Falcons led for the majority of the game, but the Oilers used a late-game comeback to steal a 3-2 win over NDC.

After NDC went scoreless in the top of the first, Mackenzie Wallace took the circle for the Falcons. After surrendering a leadoff walk, Wallace zoned in and found her groove, retiring the next three batters in order to end the first inning.

Wallace also retired the side in the second inning, and the Falcons offense came to life in the top of the third. After Maria Vanadia smacked a leadoff single up the middle, Kelsey Coleman would later hit a triple down the left field line, scoring Vanadia and giving NDC a 1-0 lead. Amy Hoover then reached based via error, and Coleman scored in the process as the Falcons' advantage grew to 2-0 after the top of the third inning.

In third and fourth innings, Wallace continued her dominant performance by going 1-2-3 in each inning. Wallace would end up recording 12 consecutive outs after allowing the leadoff walk, protecting NDC's 2-0 lead.

As the game progressed, Wallace continued to mow through the Oilers' lineup. Findlay went scoreless in both the fifth and sixth innings, and the Falcons went into the seventh inning with a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Oilers' leadoff batter reached via error, but Wallace struck out the next batter to get back on track. Wallace then forced a fly-out, leaving the Falcons one out away from victory. However, the Oilers proved resilient and used consecutive singles to tie the game at two, forcing an eighth inning.

NDC couldn't muster any offense in the top of the eighth, and in the bottom half of the frame, it was a single down the right field line that scored the winning run for the Oilers. The Falcons lost to Findlay by a final score of 3-2, losing a tough game against a quality opponent.

Game Two
Notre Dame 3, Lake Erie 2

Game two of Wednesday's twinbill featured two familiar foes, the Falcons and the Lake Erie College Storm.

The Storm started the game with instant offense in the first inning as the first three batters reached base, two via singles and one via walk. However, Ashley Hall limited the damage with two fly-outs and a strikeout, holding the Storm to just one run in the inning.

In the bottom half of the first, the Falcons' offense immediately responded. Kelsey Coleman ripped a leadoff double to center field, and Nicole Spuhler was hit by a pitch to give the Falcons two runners on and no outs. After consecutive outs threatened to end the rally, Nataly Ciocca single to right field, scoring Spuhler and tying the game at one. Anna Myers then worked a walk, loading the bases for Tayler Graver.

Graver smacked a two-run single, scoring Brittany Kirwin from third and Ciocca from second, and giving the Falcons a 3-1 lead after the first.

And then scoring came to a halt.

Hall worked through the Storm lineup with little-to-no-trouble, scattering hits here and there but not surrendering runs. While the Storm were held scoreless from innings two through six, the Falcons also were scoreless, leaving the score at 3-1 going into the seventh and final inning.

With NDC leading 3-1 and Hall pitching in the top of the seventh, the Falcons were exactly where they wanted to be. Hall induced consecutive groundouts from Lake Erie, leaving the Falcons just one out away from victory once again.

Lake Erie's Allyson Hajnosz hit a solo home run with two outs, cutting NDC's lead to 3-2, but Hall would slam the door shut on the Storm after that, clinching the win for the Falcons.

With the 3-2 win over Lake Erie, the Falcons get on the winning track and will continue their Spring Break trip with a pair of games against Post University and Felician College on Thursday, March 5. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
