Softball falls short in Monday twinbill in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Notre Dame College softball team continued its Spring trip on Monday afternoon with a pair of games against Grand Valley State University and Lewis University in the Falcons' third and fourth games of the season. Unfortunately, the Falcons fell short in each game, losing to GVSU, 11-1, and Lewis University, 4-1.

Game One
Grand Valley State 11, Notre Dame College 1

The Falcons took the field Monday afternoon against the Grand Valley State Lakers in game number three of their Spring Break trip to Florida. However, the Falcons fell short against the Lakers, losing by a final score of 11-1.

The Lakers started the top of the first inning with a three-run rally before tacking on five more runs in the second, leaving NDC trailing 8-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, Kayla Sidorski led off with a walk to give the Falcons a runner on base. Maria Vanadia then singled to center field, and suddenly the Falcons had momentum. Mackenzie Wallace would hit a two-out RBI single later in the inning, but that's the only run the Falcons would score, leaving NDC down 8-1 through two innings.

From there, the Falcons struggled to find gaps in the Lakers defense despite numerous hard-hit balls, leading to an eventual 11-1 loss to the Lakers.

Game Two
Lewis University 4, Notre Dame College 1

In the Falcons' second game of the day, and fourth of the season, NDC squared off with the Lewis University Flyers. In a low-scoring affair, Falcons fell short by a final score of 4-1.

Ashley Pokraka took the circle for the Falcons, making her second start of the season, and retired the Flyers in order in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first, Kelsey Coleman worked a walk and advanced all the way to third base after two wild pitches. However, the Falcons couldn't bring Coleman in to score, leaving the game scoreless through one frame.

The game remained scoreless untl the fifth inning, when a leadoff double from Lewis University turned into a run for the Flyers, but Pokraka limited the damage. The Falcons trailed by just one going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Maria Vanadia led off the inning with a single, and Perris Stevens was hit by a pitch to give the Falcons two runners on and no outs. Mackenzie Wallace would single later in the inning to tie the game at one, leaving the Flyers and Falcons knotted at one through five innings.

A scoreless sixth inning led to the top of the seventh, where the Flyers scored three runs in their final at-bats of the game.

The Falcons attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, but ultimately fell short by a final score of 4-1.

NDC will return to action on Wednesday, March 4 with a pair of games against the University of Findlay and Lake Erie College. The games are slated to begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
