Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Playing at home against the top team in the Mountain East Conference standings, the Notre Dame College women's basketball team hosted the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons on Saturday in Murphy Gymnasium. The Falcons put up a tough fight but fell short against FSU, losing by a final score of 74-63.
Fairmont State found momentum early on, taking a 15-10 lead over the Falcons just six minutes into the game.
Later in the first half, FSU still held a five-point lead, 23-18, but consecutive baskets from
Kelsey Miller cut the deficit to just one, 23-22, with 7:11 remaining in the first half. After FSU's Hailey Garrett scored to push the lead back to three,
Lauren Langenderfer drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 25.
With just 1:57 remaining in the first half, Langenderfer nailed another 3-pointer to bring NDC within one, 34-33. However, FSU finished the half on a 6-0 run, and the Falcons trailed by seven at halftime, 40-33.
In the first two minutes of the second half, Miller scored back-to-back lay-ups to bring NDC within one possession, 40-37.Â
The Falcons tied the game at 49 due to a jumper from
Alyssa Kraus with 12:37 remaining, but FSU responded with an 11-0 run to take a 60-49 lead over NDC.
A pair of free throws from Miller was followed by a 3-pointer from Kraus, and the Falcons began to chop away at the lead.Â
With just 4:45 remaining in the game,
Martha Nagbe scored a lay-up to cut FSU's lead to just seven, 66-59. However, a basket from FSU's Hallie Gunnoe pushed the lead to 68-59 with less than four minutes to go.
With 2:34 on the clock, Miller scored again for the Falcons but FSU matched with a basket of their own, taking a 71-61 lead over NDC. From there, the Falcons couldn't close the gap, falling to FSU by a final score of 74-63.
Miller led NDC in points and rebounds on the day, netting 23 and 10, respectively. Langenderfer also chipped in 13 points while going 3-4 from beyond the arc.
With the loss, the Falcons fall to 13-10 on the season, including a 9-8 record in Mountain East Conference play.
The Falcons will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 12 at home against West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
