Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va -- Playing on the road against the top team in the Mountain East Conference standings, the Notre Dame College women's basketball team faced a tough challenge Wednesday night against the previously 21-5 Charleston Golden Eagles. The Falcons put together a strong performance from start to finish, defeating Charleston by a final score of 87-76.
Both sides found themselves tied at 16 early in the first half before three straight NDC free throws gave the Falcons a narrow 19-16 lead. A jumper from
Molly Ritz was followed by a 3-pointer from
Martha Nagbe, as
Lauren Langenderfer assisted on both scores and the Falcons led 24-18 with 10:32 remaining in the first half.
With just five minutes remaining before halftime, Langenderfer joined the scoring frenzy with a bucket of her own, pushing NDC's lead to 32-23.
After the Golden Eagles responded with a basket to cut the deficit to seven, the Falcons ended the first half on a 10-4 run and went into halftime in control with a 42-29 lead.
Nagbe nailed another three at the start of the second half, assisted by
Celine Mangan, to push NDC's advantage to 45-29.
Less than two minutes later, Nagbe continued her hot streak with yet another three, making the score 50-34. Less than one minute later with 16:26 remaining, Langenderfer hit a 3-pointer and the Falcons were rolling on all cylinders.
Charleston cut NDC's lead down to just five, 60-55, but the three straight baskets from Nagbe, Langenderfer, and Ritz pushed the lead back to 11 with 8:31 remaining.
The Golden Eagles tried to climb back late, using a 3-pointer to cut NDC's lead to eight,but a
Kim Cook lay-up gave NDC a 73-63 lead with 4:36 left to play.
From there, the Falcons proved too strong for Charleston, winning by a final score of 87-76. With the win, the Falcons improve to 16-11 on the season, including a 12-9 mark in MEC play.
The Falcons will conclude the 2014-15 regular season at home on Saturday, Feb. 28 against Urbana on NDC's Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
